doxy in India

just a quick question....doxy seems really pricey here (UK) and as I am plannin on staying 4 plus months in India its kind of adding up to alot of money. I was thinking maybe just buy some when I arrive in Delhi. I guess my question is a) you can get it there cant you ? b) how much will it cost ? c) i won't need a prescription will i ? Thanks guys !

I have never found a UK doctor who will recommend any anti-malarial drugs. Just been handed a wadge of information and told to make my own choice.... they fear being sued.

I took Larium and it sent me mad. I took Malarone and I came down with a temperature of 104 and fever like I had malaria. With the Doxy potential side affects I don't want to take the chance of skin discolouration and light sensitivity, so I have decided not to take anything and just get the cure if I get malaria.

I have some malarone left which I will take as a cure. Does anyone know the dose? Am I mad for taking the chance in India?

From memory, Malarone is about £2.50 a tablet from the travel clinic by Victoria Station in London. You can order by phone and collect a couple of days later.

Thumbs up Doxy in India

You can purchase DOXY in INDIA without any prescriptions.
You can infact buy lot of medicine in INDIA without any doctor's advice.
It depends where you are purchasing from. You may find difficulty in CP in DELHI but if you go to remote places-you can buy full surgical kit.

Yes-you will not face any problem in purchasing DOXY or any anti-malarial drugs in DELHI.

They are much cheaper than anywhere in world !!

To my knowledge not ALL antimalarials are available in India. Malarone isn't available and Paludrine is hard to come by.
Larium is available under the name Mefloquine as is Chloroquinine (useless without Paludrine)
Doxy is available over the counter with a doctors prescription for a look at the prices see here

Oh and CP is Connaught Place in central Delhi

My doctor recommended doxy - and I'll be taking it for 6 months. She said that because it's antibiotic based it will also provide some gut protection. Usually in India I take chloroquine/proguanil (also recommended by Doctor) - but as I'm also going to South East Asia it made sense to take a prophylaxis that works across all the countries I'm going to so I don't need to switch between tablets. Doxy is supposed to be safe to take long-term

I'm picking it up today! I'll let you know! I've already spent £200 on vaccinations so I really hope it doesn't cost a fortune! I guess I should have asked in advance, oops!

In Africa you MUST always ask the price first. Is that the same in India?

Most third world countries have plenty of medicine on offer if you have the money to pay for it, but generally they are copies of medicines, analogues I think they're called. I'm sure they do the same job, just don't have glaxo stamped all over them.

Hey pix! It does seem odd to buy over-priced meds at home doesn't it?! Especially when half of them are probably produced in India anyway! I do it because I just like the security of knowing I have what I need with me and don't have to go searching for a pharmacy when I get there. I also know that I'm being given the right stuff. Also, with most malaria meds you need to take them for a while before you leave so you'd need to buy at least some in advance anyway. I guess I prefer to continue to take the same thing throughout. The idea of mixing different brands/types doesn't appeal (though that's probably just my paranoia!). It's not a big price to pay though for peace of mind!

Happysnapper! My 6 month course of doxy cost £51. Oh, and yes - you always have to agree the price in advance in India (and haggle hard!)
