doxycycline

I've been told that because doxy is an antibiotic, it will not work against Malaria, which is a parasite.

Can someone please explain? I'm currently in India and taking doxy on a daily basis.

thnks!

Doxycycline is not only an anti-malarial medicaltion, but is also used as an anti-cholera med, anti-tetanus, anti-ricketts, and, as you say - IS an antibiotic. There are NO meds that can 100% prevent you from contracting any of these diseases, but they go a long way to help.

It was also recommended as one of the things you could take in case of Anthrax attack.

Remember that?!

Yep, I've been prescribed doxy for my travels across India and South East Asia. Apparently because it's an anti-biotic it also gives some protection to your gut which has got to be welcome!

Good stuff but...

I use doxy but it, like all other malarials, should be used with regard to the potential difficulties such as sun sensitivity and counteracting bc pills, etc..

In general medicine practice in INDIA-Doxy is used as supportive drug not only FOR malaria.

Please consult some doctor before you keep on gulping medicines...

I took doxy for 2 trips and had no bad reactions. I wore sunscreen, which I would have anyways, and had no sun sensitivity, nor tummy problems. I also wound up with great healthy skin. That could have been related to not having to wake up to an alarm clock for a few months. Doxy was great compared to the Larium (mefloquin) that I first took.

i took doxy for the three weeks that i was away and since i only got back on monday i am still taking it.

i didn't notice any increase in light sensitivity at all, although, like Casey, i wore sunscreen on a daily basis and wore sunglasses. even since being at home in sydney i haven't noticed anything different.

meanwhile, in the entire three weeks, i did not get sick at all, not even a wee bit of an upset tum. this could also be due to not drinking tap water or eating much meat but i think the doxy helped. my friend travelling with me ate all the same stuff etc but was on larium. she did get sick.
