doxycycline side-effects (question for the girls!!)
hi!*
i just wondered if anyone has had a similer side effect to me while in doxycyline... ?? i've been taking it for almost 4 months now and my periods have been completely erratic (ie, missing a month, them coming back, missing a month again etc) whereas before they we completely regular. i know this isnt listed as a side effect on the drug information leaflet but i just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar as being on the doxycycline is the only thing i can put it down to!!!!thank youuu!! |

Sorry, RubyTuesday, I'm not a girl; but I am a doctor and I have prescribed lots of doxycycline over the years, several prescriptions per week in fact, mostly to women and mostly for acne. To my knowledge, I have never had a patient experience menstrual changes as a result of taking doxycycline. And I don't recall ever having found any reported association of menstrual irregularities and use of doxycycline in the medical literature. That's not to say that in your individual case the doxycycline is definitely not the problem, but it would be highly unusual for doxycycline to be responsible. You should check with a physician to see what's going on.
I should mention that it has been thought that some antibiotics (such as rifampin and erythromycin) may reduce the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives, increasing the chance that someone taking certain antibiotics could become pregnant if the only protection against pregnancy was the birth-control pill. However, the doxycycline class of antibiotics probably does not significantly affect hormal contraception, at least for the vast majority of women. Doxycycline (and other antibiotics) can also increase the chance of certain women experiencing vaginal yeast (candida) infections, but again it doesn't generally affect menstruation. |

Try Artemisinin instead
It is actually good for you. It is used both for prevention and cure in southeast Asia. It is being used as a cancer preventive and cure in western countries by herbalists. Be sure to google it for more information.

Are you in India and taking doxy? If so, your irregularity might not be due to the doxy, but instead caused by dietary changes and the stress on your body. I took doxy for about 2-3 months while in India, but went off it because there were so few mosquitoes where I was, but my cycle was WAY off due to being ill, eating differently, walking so much, etc.
