Doxycycline: Can I Start WHILE In India ???

Hi -- this is Greg and I've just gotten my prescription for Doxycycline filled. I'm pretty sure there was a mess-up because the pharmacy said that it WAS covered under my insurance so I got a sixty-day supply for three dollars here in New York. I didn't know that it would be covered and would be so inexpensive, I was concerned about the side effects, and I am assuming that since the first part of my trip will be in relatively northern areas that don't have too many mosquitos in January, that I could pretend that my India trip didn't really "start" until I had been there a few days -- for these reasons I got less doxycycline that I would technically need for a five-and-a-half-week stay. Does anyone know if for any reason I really DO need to start the medication BEFORE I go to India or can't I just start taking it a few days before I go to the eastern/southeastern parts where there WOULD be mosquitos in February?

I appreciate anybody's thoughts --

Greg in New York

I started my doxy when I arrived in India. I switched from Mefloquin to doxy, however, and had already taken two pills. If you start taking your doxy from your supply you can pick up some while in India to cover the remainder of your trip rather than skipping it at the beginning.

Start with the doxy treatment 2 days before you go to India this will ensure you've built up the drug in your system before arriving in a Malaria area!!

Ch are you sure Doxy prevents Malaria? I had a chat with my doctor friend recently he doesnt advise Doxy unless required to handle certain infections. Seeing Doxy posts & other health related issues I requested my friend to become a member here.

I'm absolutely sure, it's recommended by the WHO and several other medical sites!!
My mum and dads doctor in the UK also recommended!
I'll be using it myself this time around!!

I just recieved 120 pills of doxy this afternoon from my local pharmacist. I'll be in Southern India and the Andamans for 4 months. The doctor told me to start taking it 2 days before and 4 weeks after i get back from India just to make sure the bug isnt in your system after you get back.
