Doxy vs Proguanil/Chloroquine
I'm off to India in Feb and went for a couple of jabs today. We also discussed the malaria regime I should take. My case is slightly complicated by the fact I'm going to China/Vietnam/Cambodia/Loas/Thailand afterwards.
I was advised to speak to some Malaria Hotline on 09065508908. It only costs £1 per minute! So I had a look on the web for some advice and found this wonderful website http://www.travelpharm.com/index.cfm...a/Home.Welcome They also have a phone number so gave them a call (local rate!) and spoke to a very helpful chap about my situation. He started by recommending a course of Proguanil/Chloroquine for the India part then moving onto Doxy a couple of days before I leave for the next leg of my journey. He advised against Larium for (especially) Thailand, Laos and West Cambodia as the mossies have shown signs of being immune to it. Having then looked at this thread and seen people were being prescribed Doxy for India I phoned back and asked him why this was. He said that there is no problem taking Doxy, it's just that they advise Proguanil/Chloroquine because it has been in use for 50 odd years and they will move to Doxy when the mossies shown signs of being immune to it (as they have in Assam apparently). Until then they will continue to advise Proguanil/Chloroquine. So I'm now going to use Doxy for my whole trip to save changing regimes. Glad to hear it's cheap in India. I'll just get a couple of weeks worth before I go I reckon. Hope this helps. James |

Malaria Meds debate
As a point of comparison, here in Crete the anti-malarials are FREE but ... there is absolutely no choice ... it's Proguanil daily and Cloroquine weekly for everyone. And to be given these drugs was a bit of a battle which seems quite funny in retrospect. We went to the Tropical Medicine centre before Xmas thinking better to get on with the preparations in time for our departure for India in mid-January. The lady there said Oh it's much too early, come back in January... We insisted that we were going to be busy then and made a compromise for end of December. To cut a long story short, we returned in between Xmas and New Year and they said (different lady) Oh it's far too early to worry about it, come back in January... Yawn. After much insisting on our part we were given the pills! At the same place we enquried for our Typhoid booster vac (last had it 3 years ago for Africa) and were told Oh yes it is expiring in January 2006... so you'll be fine! What? Sorry, I'd like another one please. Why? You don't need to go to India to catch Typhoid, we have it here in Greece (really). It's not compulsory, says my book, etc. etc. Well, excuse me, I'm awfully sorry to trouble you, but I'd really like to get a sore arm as soon as possible.. oh all right then, since you insist... I'm not making this up!

Thanks for that.
I presume you are just going to India? As I'm going to be heading off through the rest of Asia afterwards I believe those tablets are unsuitable for me which is why I'm going for doxy. Cheers. |

yeah just india so am sure this will do the trick. not too chuffed about taking a tablet every day and a couple of times a week but guess it beats having malaria.
my main confusion was i didnt realise that when people were talking about proguanil and chloroquine they were talking about the stuff i'd been advised to take. don't know what i'd do without the internet xx |
