I was feeling fine until I happened to glance at the side effects list in my malaria pill box.
(And yes I have done a search for "malaria" in this site but didn't get all the info on this I want) I've been given a brand called Paludrine/Avloclor Has anyone experienced nasty side effects? Especially if you are using the same brand as me Thanks for your help. TO me, taking a malaria pill that could make my hair fall out, or even damage my retinas, is almost as bad as catching malaria. Seems crazy. CHeers guys (fixed title -m2) Last edited by -m2- : Jun 13th, 2004 at 00:16. |

on my first trip to Asia I took palodrine?? and some other ...2 weeks into the trip I got fed up being sick after taking them and threw them down the toilet
My dad worked on oil rigs off the coast of africa and was prescribed larium sent him loopy ...really bad vivid nightmares The other workers all said thuis was common and they all threw them overboard as he did after the first few nights I've never used them since and touch wood have never contracted malaria Though I did read a report on some UK newspaper that there has been a steep rise in amalrial cases in UK due to the numbers travelling and not taking teh tbalets ...Im still not convinced and would not take them ...Thats just my opinion and should be taken with the obilagtory pinch of salt I should add malaria is not that common in India from my experience and haven't meet anyone who has caught it. Take the usual precautions covering up using repellant and also burning coils or one of the electric ones in your room and investing in a deet impregnated mossie net and you'll be fine Life systems nets are amazing ...very light and small and costa round £35 ...a small price to pay Didnt use that often but when i need it im so pleased ive got it and its the first thing I pack when im going on a trip on't wear perfumes / deodorant after shave etc this attracts them supposedly eating choclate etc improves the taste of your blood so stay way from sweets etc Bryan

I've used Paludrine/Avloclor a couple of times now and experienced no ill-effects whatsoever. My partner was also taking them and also had no side-effects.
Don't let the list of possible side-effects put you off - if you always read the list of side-effects you would probably never take any medication ever again!! All medications sound terrifying when you read what MIGHT happen. Most people don't experience the side-effects though. If you still have concerns, speak to your Doctor or nurse and they will be able to put things into perspective for you. Good luck! |

With Chloroquine & Proguanil I occasionally get such horrible dreams/nightmares, so vivid, grotesque, not like normal dreams,,,,

I wonder if 70's hippy isn't mixing up with Larium (which is known for that). Chloroquine is now much out of date..

The effect of feeling weird also occured when I had taken Paludrine-anti malaria , this stopped after 3 days , there are very powerful paludrine pills , but these are not for taking in India , you will need far less heavy type , the pills you have to take when going to african countries, maybe you have gotten the wrong ones

"I wonder if 70's hippy isn't mixing up with Larium" ----------------- No its Chloroquine & Proguanil, just checked the box. Chloroquine is far from out of date in the UK, It's the one our biggest pharmacy (Boots) recommends most often |

Never heard that on before age compatriot but there's always something new to learn. Besides the side effects are highly individual. Never had a problem with that one. Switched to Doxy last trip and aside from the proverbial sun sensitivity for the first week it was great. Third trip back I had decided to forgo all and that was a very bad move. I would like to find a cheap source of Malarone or some way to stick it to my health plan..

I think it's completely a personal choice but I'd add that not getting bit in the first place has always worked best for me. I've never taken anti-malarials, but instead have plenty of good repellent (w/Deet), cover up as necessary and always rent hotel rooms with screens and a/c or fans.
