Welcome to IndiaMike!
When are you going to India, and where will you be? Maybe we'll meet there! I've been diagnosed with Type 2 since my last visit to India and so it will be very interesting. I will PM you with some websites that I've found about Indian food and diabetes. I don't know if you are aware of them but there is some sort of hand-carry cooler that works on an evaporation principle, so all you have to do is make sure the reservoir is filled with water -- these must be incredibly good for carrying insulin. Another thing I've just found out is that channa dahl (that's the yellow lentils that, when you cook them, they do NOT break down into mush) have almost NO effect on blood sugar... so I don't believe we can count them as 'carbs' when figuring food values.

there is an aryvedic cocktail made from bitter gourds that reduces blood sugars greatly. My brother-in-law is type 2 and swears by it. Good luck!

Me too, I have type 2 so I have to be a bit careful. You can also eat lots of protein and less carbs that keeps your blood sugar stable. Lentils are very good for that.

From something I was reading on a website (Google: South Beach Diet), channa dal (yellow, looks like split pea but does not turn to mush when stewed) has almost no effect on blood sugar. Hard to believe, but I'll try it when I'm there.
This will be my first visit to India with Type 2 Diabetes and I'm only a little apprehensive about it. |
