Dentist needed!!!
Hello,
I am currently in Andaman islands. Before i started the trip (a months ago) i fixed a small cavity in a back tooth. the fix just fell off few days ago and now i got a bigger cavity exposed in my tooth. I guess it cant wait 5 months for fixing it home so im asking about good, western class dentists to fix it in my next stops, which are Kolkata, Darjeeling, Sikkim. If you can recommend of a good-for-tourists dentist in these areas, or having other suggestion for me on how to deal with this situation - please please share with me!! many thanks!! |

Hi Itamar,
Contact your Embassy in India. They will (should) have a list of practitioners that they recommend in particular parts of India. While I haven't used it so I can't tell you how effective it is or for how long, there is also a plugging paste that you can get to temporarily fill the hole. I don't know how available it is in pharmacies/chemists in India (IMers??). Good luck. Last edited by Dr. Gajaprishthakara : Mar 24th, 2007 at 18:10. Reason: clarity - AGAIN! |

Hi, I don't remember the name, but the best hospital in Darjeeling has a good dentist' service, it seems. I am set to go there in about a week, so I will try to report if possible.
Otherwise Kolkatta must be plenty of great and inexpansive cabinets. You won't have difficulties finding one... Look for "dental clinics, kolkatta" in google possibly or ask your hotel there. Yes, the embassy might be of help too, although remember they have a all-inclusive health insurance, so they don't care paying a lot for nothing. |

an embassy will keep a list of doctors and other professionals that have a good reputation and maybe even speak you language. the list is for nationals who need assistance. To say that it is a list of expensive practitioners who do nothing is fatuous and misleading.

Hello mattnsuzi,
You're right, embassy's listings are surely good. No doubt. What I meant to say is one could possibly end up paying a lot more for nothing more than another reasonably good place. But yes, this a very personal assumption which needs to be verified... All in all it's all a matter of individual choice whether one will look for top class or average. I must say I have been really impressed lastly with the very high quality standards of dental clinics in India. I found them actually better than here in the west, in the sense that they are well-equipped and trained, friendly, fast, & reliable. Over here I often need to book more than 6 months in advance for an appointment, while in India one can just go and be served within 20 minutes. And this is not to mention the ridiculous rates (approximately 10-20 times lower). |

In the mean time, brush your teeth with Vicco Vajradanti...
(No I don't get a commission...)
