Toilet humour?? Oh no, what have I started! Do you think we may be too obsessed sometimes about the cleanliness, washing hands thing - if the rubber gloves are on wouldn't that be enough???
And just last night, the first fix-up job filling thisgirl did for me has dropped out chomping on bajra (millet) roti- many swear words here - and now I'm faced with this dilemma and it is too hot to travel to Jodhpur.. Risk the 1st appointment in the day?

The ideas of living outside of a big city in India is beginning to loose its appeal for me!

My vet is the proud owner of one rubber glove - which he washes after every use!

Just thought I throw this in here for laughs

But come to think of it I could well imagine smaller surgeries, dentists or other doctors, in villages doing it that way too ...

Aishah, is this the only dentist anywhere in your vicinity? Maybe try another one.

Love your sense of humour Noodle - where would we be in India without one!!! Well, the other dentist .. I went about 4yrs ago to him and the filling he gave me costing 500 rupees was actually a lined hole!! It did the trick until last November when the Delhi dentist redid it correctly. That is the choice of dentists here, and yes, Nick a big city has a lot going for it but I do remember in 1995 when I visited Chennai huge smutty pollution. Is it still like this??? We are pollution free - only sand and dust.. I have made up my mind - will get the 1st appointment of the day - I figure with the heat at present all germs will be dead on dry instruments! In May I am staying several days in Delhi getting preventative work done on all the old fillings etc. so i just need this one to tide me over. Touch wood, I've been lucky with no pain or sensitive area around that tooth.

Talking

Re-thinking - if the hole lining man's 'filling' lasted 4 yrs and the new dentist's only 3 weeks... Maybe I go back to the not-so-good one!!

That kind of illogical logic often holds true for India

I thought you said, "huge, smutty population." for a minute!

Don't know. I'm used to the Chennai air, and I don't find it bad at all, unless near either river or the canal, in which case just don't breathe for danger of instant vomiting.

thanks for the smileys tip Noodle - I haven't pushed that button yet!! Nick - I stayed at Hotel Kanchi right in the thick of it, it was my first visit to a big city and the usual 'shock' but quickly got over the terrifying rickshaw rides, the belching bus fumes -this seemed to be the major generator of the smut-so I think the area I was in was the worst as far as air POLLUTION goes! Now back to the dental clinic hygiene... I think I have more than enough info. from this post so far - thanks to all!

Update - I went back to the Punjabi lass because there was no choice. The hole lining dentist was consistently closed over a period of days and not available on his mobile. But - good news! There is now a handbasin - located in the waiting room in a corner!! It was very grubby and I showed the boy assistant how to clean it properly while we waited for the dentist. I made the 1st appointment in the day and she was late. He had all the right cleaning stuffs - while we waited another man who made glass lenses came in - with my Hinglish, his as well we managed a conversation with the boy about cleanliness important in dental clinics. Dentist finally arrived - and we settled on a less bulky filling, one step up from a hole lining and it is still there and I have caught no infection!!

Well, thumbs up for the improvised hygiene education class and congrats to the new filling! May both last for a long time!

I don't know where Hotel Kanchi is....

Something in this thread haunts me. That is the idea of cleaning the gloves.

Because it demonstrates such an incredible lack of understanding of the basic principles of the danger of infection. And these people have some sort of medical training?

Hotel Kanchi is on C-in-C Rd near ITDC and if you kept walking over a smelly river you ended up at Spencers Plaza, passing the Taj Connemara on the way which I eyed enviously as a desirable accommodation option to the dirty, seedy place I was in!! But couldn't afford.Stayed there for 4 nights and by the end of the visit my eyes had adapted to all sights and I found it not so bad!
Back to thread - the washing gloves person is a vet I think not my dentist. But yes, you wonder, because all these professionals have supposedly qualified in universities where you would think basic hygiene principles would be taught. They are all branches of medical professions and it certainly makes you wonder at the calibre of graduates. My dentist is a Gold Medallist, but her whole manner etc. is like something out of a Hindi soap opera. Her dress is stylish salwar, no white coat, just the face mask on top. She is great at gossiping with whoever comes in as she does your teeth or with the other female assistant who always arrives late after the cleaning boy who acts as the instrument passer until she arrives. There are constant interruptions as you sit in the chair, lacking a suction piece in your mouth, and the cotton wool disintegrating in the meantime as you wait for her to finish the conversations... Not a pleasant experience!

About 15 yrs ago a dentist in Mumbai used no gloves at all when he did root canal on me and I now believe he did not use anasthesia on me.
