Exclamation Dengue Fever Warning!!

FYI - I have just returned from 6 week trip in India - an awesome trip indeed.
However the last 2 days I started getting the symptons of Dengue Fever - aching joints, high sweating fever, headaches, rash and follwing my return home I was submitted to hospital with pathetically low white blood cell and platelete count - 4 days spent on a drip. I am out today and feel OK.
Dengue Fever is spreas by mosquito and judging from the 4-6 day incubation time (ie. time bitten to time of fever) I would say it must have been in Mumbai or Udaipur, most probably the latter. Udaipur has very little water in the lake but their were mosquitoes at sunset evrywhere.
Cover up with repellent where you can - Dengue can be deadly!!!!

On the road to recovery!!

pleased to hear you are now recovered.
after checking through the incredibely useful posts and info on this site i thought there was a consensus that mossie nets arent really needed in that area.
i fly in 3 days time and havent bought one so am now reconsidering.

thanks for sharing the word of caution!

Great reminder, Cheats, and glad you're over it. It is a very painful and sick feeling disease to get. I don't care how potentially harmful slathering myself with noxious chemicals can be for the short time I'll be in dengue country, because I don't want to get this one.
Any scientific types out there who might know what the incidence rate of dengue is in various areas in India?

Unfortunatly Dengue is passed by mossies that are out during the day and not the night time ones.

Dont know how to really avoid this one
Its quite a bad problem on Ko Phan Ghan in Thailand also...

The CDC is your friend!

"Globally, there are an estimated 50 to 100 million cases of dengue fever (DF) and several hundred thousand cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) per year."

Over and over again people post asking about Mosquitos in Rajasthan. And often they get answers like....."it's a desert--how many mosquitoes could there be???" As cheats points out, Rajasthan DOES have mosquitoes. We are in Udaipur every year in November and can guarantee mosquitoes! drought or no drought. Even in the dryest areas of India, there are always plenty of open sewers and animal watering troughs for them to breed in!

Odomos

I noticed several Indian posters have mentioned odomos which is widely available in India. Did a google search and this stuff unlike deet is suposed to be harmless accorning to tests. It's also been in use for 30 years. Might be a good alternative to deet .....
thanks for the warning on Dengue fever. we're heading off the end of Nov.
