Hiya, I'm getting my first encephalytis shot tomorrow. I'm paying €50 per shot. It's a lot of money but watchagonnado (counting the encephalytis shots, total money spent on vaccines+medicine : €225!!). I've had the shots before, for a previous trip in 93', and it went pretty smoothly, no side effects. As for dengue, I'm not aware of any vaccine.

Hi cheryl,

You might want to check out this earlier thread on Japanese B Encephalitis for more info.

I had the shots with no side effects.

Jap encephalitis

Hi thanks for that, i had a read of the comments shared by other India mike forum users. I did actually take the plunge and have the vaccination as i a travelling all over and have been advised. However, my brain is aching with the decision on wether to get malaria pills. So many people told me not to bother as they make you so sick and they only protect you from it about 50% anyway? What are your comments please??

Cheryl I'm afaraid your head will keep om "birling" over the malaria question as it really is a personal choice. You've obviously read all the info so you know the ins and outs. One thing though it's hard to put a percentage figure on the effectivness of anti malarials as it's not down to the effectivness in the individual more how well it stops the parasite multiplying!!
So a 50 percent rate of effectivness is probably not true!!
Anti malarials give you time to get a doctor before the multiplication reaches life threatening levels.
Some people say (I'm not disagreeing here) that it's a simple case of going to the doctor and using high doasage anti malarials to kill the parasite.
True but you may not know you have it! Sometimes low level symptoms could be mistaken for many deseases without a blood test you just don't know!! Or you may be far away from a good doctor and with some strains of the virus 24 hours can have serious consquences for your health
If you really can't make up your mind put the decision in the lap of a good doctor not other travelers!!

Happy Traveling
