Dengu and chickun-gunya
My parents should be going to India this week but news of the two diseases has put a dampner on things.
They'll be spending most of their time in Gujarat. Although their are not many cases of dengue there, my dad is worried because he is diabetic and at a higher risk of catching anything. At the moment, he is looking to cancel the trip. Is anybody their atm who can advise or not as to whether it is safe to go their? Thanks. |

its difficult to say. exactly where are you parents going in Gujarat? big cities or rural places? are they travelling around or are they staying in one place?
two of my cousins got it (madras) and two of dad's cousins (in trivandrum) got it.. in the deep south. this is chikungunya i am talking about. and they are still hurting from it. for the elderly, you do worry since its severely dehibilitating (sp). and there are no medicines as such other than pain relievers these docs are prescribing. any IM members here from Gujarat?..what say you guys? i am unaware of gujarat reporting dengue at all..but i could be wrong and i am not any where near there at the moment.. if i have to lean conservative, and from what you have said, i would cancel the trip. |

information is sparse atleast in the english media...maybe the local media might have it different..but here's something in this article that came out today...
Govt makes a U-turn, says 1.3 mn may be affected by chikungunya PTI Monday, October 09, 2006 21:09 IST DNA India http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1057655 "Our current concern is diagnosing people who are affected with the viral," he said. He added that they have received information about some deaths in Ahmedabad due to chikungunya and they would be investigating it too. "In Ahmedabad too deaths have been attributed to chikungunya. The profile of the victims has shown that elderly people have died. In one case there was report that the person suffered from kidney problem," he added." |

There is too much political obfuscation (wow! is that the right word? sounds good anyway
) going on.Day after day we see headlines "Chickengunya/Dengue under control says <insert minister/politician>". Have to say I find that worrying!!! Currently in Tamil Nadu the ruling clown and the ex-ruling clown are slaging it out over chickungunya, the ex-ruling clown claming that people are dying of the disease, the ruling clown saying that there have been no deaths in the state. This is my filtering of the local newspaper reports: Chickungunya is a very nasty, but short-lived (5 - 10 days) disease for which (like many viral diseases) there is no cure, only symptomatic treatment. Apart from the fact that it hurts more (severe joint pains) it is similar to a very bad flu. secondary infections can arise, especially in the infirm, and deaths have been recorded from secondary infections. There is little discipline here when it comes to medicines. Doctors prescribe great lists of things to keep the patient happy, patients self-prescribe or down handfulls of pills because they think they will cure/protect them. In the face of a very painful disease, I wonder how many people are OD-ing on paracetamol? Personally I am less worried about chickungunya than I am about extremely-drug-resistant TB, which now exists in many places in the world. So far Dengue has not been reported here. Best to be a bit more careful than usual about those damn mossies, though. None of this is advice: just my personal reaction to what's going on. The current situation might make me a little reluctant to visit Delhi, but I wouldn't cancel a trip anywhere else. ---and I'm not running away from Chennai!

Thanks for the advice guys. Akhila (a Gujarati newspaper) reports a number of cases in Gujarat. I think it'll probably better to err on the side of caution on this one.

Chikungunia turned out to be dangerous to elderly who were aleady diabetic or hypertensive.
However in Ahmedabad, the peak has passed--and I believe it is true of rest of the state as well (the sunny weather was established only last week). However a case of dengue was reported yesterday from Baroda. |
