Exclamation Delhi reels under dengue

Delhi reels under dengue
The Delhi government says it will declare dengue outbreak as an epidemic if the situation is not brought under control by Tuesday.

Delhi Health Minister, Yoganand Shastri confessed that the situation is indeed bad. "It is an alarming situation, with the cases increasing every day. People should be more careful," he said.

Spreading far and wide

Delhi is not the only city affected this badly by dengue. The dreaded disease is spreading its grip in various cities of north India as well.

Neighbouring satellite towns such as Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and even Muradabad have also reported as many as 201 cases of the disease.

While in Lucknow, 2 people have been reported dead and over 40 dengue cases detected so far. Fogging and sprinkling of pesticides has been ordered in UP.

Precautions to prevent Dengue

* Avoid mosquito bites when travelling in tropical areas

* Keep body covered during day and night to avoid mosquito bites

* Keep surroundings clean and properly ventilated

* Repellent, electric vapour mats and coils should be used

* Water should not be stored in flower pots, coolers, open water tanks

Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) are the main carriers of that nice little gift .... correct? The big dumb slow flying ones.

Anopheles, speedy buggers, are the ones that get me all the time.

Still trying to get them straight.

Oh yes... illustrated mosquito recognition course, please, with photos and silhouettes, like they used to have to recognise enemy planes in the war.....

Chennai has been reeling under Chikungunya. Another mossie-carried disease with symptoms like a mixture of flu and arthritis. It is nasty, usually lasts about 10 days, but there have been reported deaths.

It can be mild, though which, is more than can be said for dengue

Yup! Personally don't have to worry about dengue - or the ones that bite only vegetarians!

Thumbs down Where to get anti-dengue gear

Namaste,
Seriously where would one get a electric vapour mats and how many INR does it cost fot the refills? If it is not thing it's something else, but have seen many news articles on this one, was first noticed at a medical school / hospital
thanks for any serious answers, gregor

PS could this be put on the IM'S t-shirt with anti-dengue proprtiies. Like a body bag with a covered straw for feeding times?
till I type again, gregor

The strange thing is that the biggest outbreak of Dengue has been reported at the prestigeous All India Medical Sciences in Delhi where a medical student died and the daughter of a doctor couple also died elsewhere.
This type of mosquitoes bite at dusk & early morning so be careful.

The electrical vapor mats are or should be available a departmental stores, they are widely used and much the same as in the west.

Vanilla maybe, more of the floral varieties, maybe apricot, peach, etc., so before you swat them all, one needs to offer them flowers (fresh) and if they settle in then they are vegetarian. If however they go for your jugular, then we can put the flowers on your coffin.

Gregornot A Goodknight vaporiser will cost you About 70-80 rupees with liquid to last 45 days!!
They're available pretty much on every street corner!
They are very small and easy to carry, Goodknight is the best brand name IMHO as it has added MMR (mozzie mortality rate )

You can still buy the machines with mats but the vapouriser works just as well, if not better!

Now if you were travelling to say Australia, there might be an out break of Dengue Fever in Cairns for very much the same reasons but thankfully a better outcome. So going into a known Dengue Fever area in Australia always required the traveller to take precautions, that is a good insect repellent, wear light coloured loose fitting clothing that covered all parts of the body, suitable footwear, use coils and vaporisers and mosquito nets where appropriate.

I am suggesting that the determined but wise traveller would take similar precautions as appropriate to their situation and if you are travelling with children, well, they are the most vulnerable. These particular mozzies I believe are active in the early morning and at dusk so with a little attention being paid at these times and bearing in mind the mozzies may be a little flexible and say, ah well it's close enough, lets get out there and kick butt to them suckers that have got their pants down; heh heh.

Essentially do your best to minimise the risk, and while you are dodging mozzies don't get run over by an auto rickshaw OK.

if you look at the bottom of this page, you will see posts warning about this since 2003. I think if travelers take the appropriate precautions......

there is nothing on the Center for Disease Control homepage about it:

"Travel Health Warnings (postpone nonessential travel): None
Travel Health Precautions: None"

don't live in fear.
