Delhi belly- what exactly

Hi, I know this condition has been named in the past, but what exactly is it? Is it like Montezuma's revenge? throwing up? Inquiring minds want to know! I'm going in less than three weeks (yeah, trip is all I think about these days) so I want to know what to expect. Thanks, this site has been amazing!

Delhi Belly is caused by eating too much good food when in New Delhi. Ever so slowly you start to notice a tightness around your waste .... and then a button may pop .... and before you know it you have a round plump little buddy that you never noticed before ..... Voila - Delhi Belly!

Seriously - I think it may be generalized as traveller's Diarrhea caused by exposure to unfriendly bacteria!

Enjoy your adventure Eve68.

On a serious note, this is an ancient term that reflects a lot of prejudice and bias... let me explain.
Briefly stated, it is a termed that was used to imply TRAVELER'S DIARRHEA in the past.
TD can possibly be acquired anywhere on the planet, so why single out Delhi.
TD is an infection acquired via food or water. It may be viral or bacterial. The illness may be self-limited, or antibiotic treatment may be needed.
It is good to drink Oral Rehydration Solution. Sachets of the powdwer are available at the local chemist shop. Indian brands include Electral and Walyte P.
It is also good to drink lemonade, with sugar and salt added, to make up for the loss of water, sodium and potassium due to diarrhea.
Tomato soup or juice and bananas are also a good source of potassium.
If anyone suffers from it, get well soon, but please don't call it Delhi belly!

Well, I think TD is only called "Delhi Belly" when people get it in India - hence the term "Montezuma's Revenge" for the same problem when encountered "South of the Border." Delhi isn't really being singled out - it just has the misfortune of rhyming with "belly". "Chennai Belly" just doesn't have the same ring ... although Mumbai Belly is pretty good. And as far as singling out places, though, it is a fact, unfortunately, that people are far likelier to get TD in some places than in others - and the Indian subcontinent ranks high on the risk list.

What a great chart! Please post it to this thread too.

I recommend the same thread, Eve, as informative on this subject and how to avoid it.

....And my own name for the problem is Tamil Tummy

Hi Eve68:
Yeah it's the same thing. It was my turn for Montezuma's revenge/Delhi belly during our trip in Jan. Kept me out of commission for only 1 day...in Jodhpur(spelling)Pretty sure it was from breakfast in Jaisalmer...oh well...no biggy. Gani, our driver went to a market he knew and brought me back a couple of lassis. Seemed to help. Don't worry about it though. Assume you'll get it and if you do, so be it. If you don't, bonus. Gave my wife time to shop without me.

Delhi belly

I know you're just gathering information so you'll be prepared, but also be prepared to have nothing at all happen. Over the years, I think I've spent about six months altogether in India, and I've NEVER had even the slightest twinge. No wonder I love Indian food!
Good luck!

So why not just call it Binge Twinge or some such and save my beloved Delhi's honor?

Oh, thanks, it doesn't sound that bad. I got a very mild Montezuma'a revenge while in Mexico probably because one of the drinks had ice in it. I'll take the necessary precautions. The map was great dzibead!

I use the term "the spray paint attachment" since I´m technically oriented. Praying to the porcelain god is also graphic , but somewhat disrespectful.
