I bought the a 50% Deet from Boots and a Johnson's off which also contains DEET but I think around 30%. I liked the smell and consistence of the Boots product best. It had a pleasant smell and did not irritate my skin and I have eczema! My advice is to keep it in a plastic bag as the bottle gets sticky as you use it and can mess up the stuff in your bag. Also avoid spraying on watches and jewellry as they may tarnish. I found it very effective against leeches as well. You should use during the day too because mozzies can carry other things apart from malaria. I think someone already mentioned Dengue fever. At night when the risk of malaria mosquitoes is highest it is best to cover up as much exposed skin as possible to minimize the risk and to avoid having to spray DEET on large areas.

Sounds pretty grim to me

Sound advise, but not all that much fun.It apears that you are one of those peaple whose chemical make up attracts the little beasties.
I was working in a welsh valley and the air was alive with midges, little black flies. They don't bite but get in your hair in your mouth and up your nose.so i was told. Everybody else was attacked but not me!wrong chemical make up,they dident like me .At the time i was on a course of peniclin.Alcahole and penicilin don't mix but silly billy me starts drinking guinness.Next day in the river i was attacked!!The little beasties got everywhere ,horrible!! My chemical make up had changed.Lucky anough ,finnished the course of penicilin and all returned to normal.
If i was attacked by the mossies like that i (No matter what i done) i would stay in for the hour after sunset and generly all night .pretty grim though.

yes malaria is not nice at all. You shouldnt get too paranoid but a few simple precautions such as taking your tablets and avoiding as much as possible getting bitten is very wise. You can have fun anyway - I know I did! Ok I had to pop a few pills and I kept spraying away and keeping well covered after sunset but so what its well worth it. when I was in Brazil a few years back the girls who came up with me kept making fun of me and my malaria precautions - until we met someone who had malaria - then they were all begging to borrow my spray!

I avoid Deet like the plague, though the Indian health people recomend it for tick infrested areas.

In Aust I use Bayer AUTAN Repel, this is the best stuff that I have used and have been concreting for 6 hours in the sweating heat and while mozzies are buzzxing all round me this stuff still acts as a force field, very impressed. It uses the Active Constitutent: 99.8 g/L PICARIDIN (Bayrepel) in a yellow container and red cap.

I use DEET but not on my skin. Collar, cuffs, socks and in the evening a few drops on the edges of my bed linen and it works like a charm. It doesn't touch my skin and the little gnats can't stand it. I find any Tea Tree based repellent has a hug quality control problem - some batches work well - some batches hardly at all - the shelf life is limited as well - so be careful with that older purchased stuff.
