I would bring a mix of cash and traveler checks, with more money being held in the checks. This way in case you lose them they can be replaced. As to how much money you should bring, it all depends on how long you'll be staying and how well you'll be living.
Some of the best exchange rates will be found at the exchange located in the airport or at local banks. You should at least get some money exchanged at the airport this way you have some for tips and a cab ride.

Ndhillon, the best exchange rate is provided by your ATM card(bank card). If you have a bank account with Royal Bank, TD CanadaTrust, Bank of Montreal, CIBC or Scotia Bank then just use your bank card to withdraw cash . You will get a much better exchange rate as compared to using a money changer.
