Talking Contraception for Women in India

Hi people.
I am relly sorry to have to ask that question...
In France it is really common for any woman to have contraception pill everyday or something else.
But as I am planning to stay a long while in India, I would like to know what type of contraception is available FOR WOMEN...Are the different pills available? Or shall I prepare a stock for a while?
Then Can Anybody tell me if I would be allowed to receive my pills from France if not available in India...
Thanks for your help!

Indian varieties are certainly available. Getting anything through the mails is problematic. Just find the particular formulation locally that you prefer..

Yes, be certain to get the generic information for the contraceptive pills you take as the Indian brand names will vary.

Other than that, there is no problem, just tell the pharmacist what you want and check the expiration date on the package. I believe the retail price is on these, set by the manufacturer, so look for "MRP" on the packet.

Then buy somewhere else!

Selling packaged products above the MRRP which is marked on the pack is illegal in India.

Hi Ode To The Earth

**With the standard caveat that I'm not a doctor or other qualified medical person**

You may like to bear in mind that you can react differently to different forms of the Pill. Even if it seems to be more or less the same as what you are taking at home. If you are particularly satisfied with the one you're on, I would recommend letting your doctor at home know that you're going away for X amount of months and requesting a prescription to cover you while you're away - with an extra packet in case one gets damaged. Do remember that illness can affect the effectiveness of your pill, so bring some form of barrier method as well (condoms or diaphragm).

Cheers!

Hazel

On that note, wasn't there something about certain medications (e.g. malaria meds, inoculations) possibly interfering with their effectiveness? Maybe something to ask about while you're at it.

ps I've traveled with women whose period would go all haywire when traveling, seems to be quite common. STD's aside, could be another good reason to rely on conventional contraceptives for backup.

I think there is at least one doctor in France.
And the people in this forum do mundane jobs like wash cars/ cut trees and plumbing.

But serioulsy, there are pills out there that are good for a week. One can stay atmost 6 months in India, which comes to about ~25 weeks. I am a professional trash van driver but I think you're allowed to buy 25 pills in most of the developed parts of the world and the Indian airports scan for explosives/weapons/addictive drugs and not stuff like pills and condoms.

hmm... of what I heard Mac, is that first 3 months in India people get stomach problems so they want Immodium then. Then, later when they are healthy enough to have a go, they can buy things from Indian markets. Indian pharma itself is not too bad but there is a sizeable counterfeit market too.

BBC did a good documentary on the counterfeit market of Indian medications - bought by WHO and exported to Nigeria where they were totally inaffective. If you buy pills in India go for brand name, check packaging, check manufacturer no., expiry date, date of manufacture etc. Generally you will find the 'real' item will be priced a little higher than cheaper 'duplicates'. As nick says, you pay the RRP and no more although there is something called local taxes factored in as well - this is legit. Sometimes the cheaper one is o.k. but you have no guarantee.
