Confused about water
I`m flying into India soon. I`ve been reading the treads on the bottled water situation, and that doesn`t sound good at all. Is it any brands that are okay?
I`m going to stay in pharganj for some days, and I know that this is quite a culture schock for a newbie like me... But what is your favorite resturant in the area... I need a break from the chaos, and I hope there is some great places to relax with good safe food A |

The internet is full of hysteria. Just make sure your bottles are sealed--just as you would in your hometown.

Look for an insignia - ISI - in a box on the label. My very reliable and overprotective driver told me that that meant it was approved for purity by some gov't board [can't remember name] which at least means it might be better than not approved at all...

self-sufficiency
If you are really worried, take a water treatment system with you.
This means a filter, iodine tablets or something like Aqua Mira (Google this). If you're in doubt about the purity of the bottled water, use any of the above. Your confidence in the water, along with your own ability to be self-sufficient, will increase dramatically. Also, try to refill your bottle and use your purification system of choice instead of piling up a bunch of empty plastic containers. Much better for the environment. Have fun! |

Like many commercial products, bottled water is of variable quality. Sometimes there are scares about particular makes, sometimes the autorities revoke the licences of some companies for not not being up to standard.
But eating and drinking are two thigs we just have to do. So we cannot avoid a certain amount of risk.... You are unlikely to get ill from drinking water from sealed bottles.

You could also go a bit more expensive route and get water filtration system. You're looking at $75-$150. They are lightweight, can be used anywhere (in hotel sinks, rivers, etc. and good for about 125Gal. Recreational or camp stores sell them. I do combination of bottled h20 or my own filtration depending on how safe I feel water is. Some hotels will have filtered water available to guests as well. Keep away from ice cubes!
