Part and parcel of life in India I'm afraid and it really makes no difference in the standard of accomodation, I had one in the Radisson!!
They are a bit gross but altogether harmless, I could tell you the story about my mate who woke up................. Nah maybe not

There used to be this girl in school who used to catch coackroaches and bring it to class. Caused quit a few disturbances until our principal said no-cockroaches-in-classrooms.

I captured a cockroach in an upturned wine glass in a hotel in Southern Mexico.

Next day, the maid had cleaned the room and put a clean glass over the cockroach - maybe she thought it was a pet!

Or, maybe, she thought it's your snack...

Just returned from three days at the "renovated" tourist bungalow in Satapada, Orissa. I killed no less than NINE big fat cockroaches the first night and made a point of leaving them lieing around so that in the morning the sweeper would see that I was not kidding and corroborate my story to the management.

I found out that this was a big mistake. When I woke up at 3 in the AM I found cockroach number ten feasting on his dead buddies.

Seraph...

EEP!

You know, the Lonely Planet types can make fun of me all they want, but this is why I sometimes pay a little more for a hotel room. Of course, in some locations, I guess critters are an inevitable part of the world and cannot be avoided.

Lightbulb Don't attract em!

Keeping food in your room can attract unwanted critters. Any sugar residue and ants show up tout de suite. Roaches probably home in on the same smells that attract ants. Never know what creatures might show up. Ones I always welcome are the geckos. These little guys can make quite a dent in the insect population of your room. Most enjoyable watching them move around on the walls and ceilings. Will attach a photo of a Goa art deco gecko....

cockroaches - hmm

I've met them in Germany too

I've met them in Ukraina

I've met them in the States

but I never met them in India - maybe the Indian type is to small or camouflaged to good for my eyes

on the other side I've heard they contain much protein and some people say they're tasting quiet well *lol* - Though if you have the chance to catch one, pick it up and try - bon appetit

Nice Art Deco Gecko, Wanderer!

When I left my Chennai home there were two living there, one just under and one just over an inch long. I felt very guilty for not leaving a window open so that plenty of food could fly in. But I was pleased to hear that one, at least, is still there and has grown.

I like lizards!
