just as well you guys aren't buddhists or jains - you'd be forced to wait for the cockroach to die a natural death! horrific tale! glad it all ended in smiles (except for the roach).

He sat me down in his surgery, produced one of those mirror things they wear on their heads and looked in my ear. He then inserted a metal tube into my ear as a kind of guide and inserted a long tool purpose made for the job to carefully scrape away and dislodge the wax

I asked him why he didn't syringe and he said this method was kinder, more efficient and completely safe for the eardrum. What blessed relief it was too!

again!

Yes, I've had wax removed from my ear by ENT specialists in London and Chennai several times, and never by dissolving it.

I'd never had it done that way before, but I shall insist on it in future!

I guess, beetles and insects periodically enter our eyes/ears to smash our ego and to remind us that we are not invincible .

My wife is happy killing them as is my 3.5 year old daughter. She runs after them shouting 'KILLIT, KILLIT'. I think San will be a bit more wary of them in future though!

San was screaming aplenty until I killed it. As I said in the post I drowned it in corn oil - as recommended by the internet so it must be alright.

San's fine with cockroaches, as long as they're not inside her. Lizards she can't stand. She'll run away and scream at me to get rid of it. They're a pain to catch too. In the future I'll suggest we maintain a healthy lizard population, on the grounds that they might eat the cockroaches. I always encouraged spiders when I lived in the UK, as they would catch and devour the other creepy-crawlies.

one mosquito can destroy my peace of mind for days.

Despite an armoury of chemical and electrical weapons, it often happens.

Insects can destroy our houses, our crops --- we are very far from invincible.

They outnumber us in every possible way.... in fact, I believe they outnumber everything!

And, two days ago I saw the most stunningly beautiful beetle I have ever seen: so polished you could see your tiny reflection in it, and a wonderfully brilliant iridescent gold/green/blue. Even on it's legs, tiny bright-gold markings, and its eyes, seen in the sun, tiny brilliant gold headlights. All this in about 1/4 inch.

Sadly, no.

I don't carry the camera around usually, and, although one day I'll get a camera-phone for those would-have-missed-it-otherwise shots, nothing short of a good lens and a very good macro function would have done justice to this little beauty.

But, if I had had the camera, I'd have been obsessed with photographing it, so sometimes it is better just to enjoy the moment

Something similar has happened to both me and my mother in past. Both the times the culprit was some flying bug (you know those ants which grow wings after rains).
Both of times, my mother preferred using homely solution - putting small amount of mustard oil inside. After an hour or so, the bug came out, the way it got in, dead.
Our ears are working prefectly fine.

Okay, I don't mean to offend anyones religious beliefs, but this question begs to be asked. What would people think or do if after checking into my hotel room I set off a bug bomb and leave for a few hours? RAID can solve a lot of my bed bug cockroach concerns!

plug-in mosquito killers are common. You are not going to worry anybody, in most situations, by trying to reduce the insect population of your room.

Bedbugs should not be a problem unless you are staying in really dirty and nasty places. Don't try to fight them: move somewhere else.

Cockroaches except in the most clean/expensive places you are likely to see a few, for instance when turning on the bathroom light at night at night. However hard we try, there will be some around. Unbeatable, so might as well accept.

Mosquitoes are the worst. Use repellents, use the plug-in thingy or spray your room an hour or so before bed...
