Choice of stand-by emergency
I didn't thought to much at malaria problem, until watching Discovery three days ago. they made me think about.. ...May be they have such a nice way of spotting the problem, or may be I was in a bad mood. anyway...the prophylaxis and stand-by emergency (something like emergency treatment when seeing a doctor is not possible) where all discussed here in the forum, but just in case one is looking for stand-by emergency.. here is what I found on http://www.who.int :
"A drug selected for stand-by emergency treatment should always be different from the drugs used for prophylaxis, and should be one to which no resistance has been reported in the countries to be visited (see Country list)." Recommended prophylactic regimen - Stand-by emergency treatment prophylactic: None Stand-by emergency treatment: Chloroquine, for P. vivax areas only Mefloquine Quinine Artemether and lumefantrine Atovaquone/proguanila prophylactic: Chloroquine alone or with proguanil Stand-by emergency treatment: Mefloquine Quinine prophylactic: Mefloquine Stand-by emergency treatment: Quinine Quinine + doxycycline or tetracycline for 7 days prophylactic: Doxycycline Stand-by emergency treatment: Mefloquine Quinine + tetracycline for 7 days prophylactic: Atovaquone/proguanil Stand-by emergency treatment: Quinine + doxycycline/tetracycline for 7 days " The whole document can be found here: http://www.who.int/ith/en/ http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publication...0364_chap7.pdf |

Interesting information, but as has been said here before, we all must be cautious about relying on IM for medical advice. A doctor with experience in tropical medicine is a much more trustworthy source of information. The best time to learn about malaria prevention is *before* you deliberately place yourself in a risky situation. Malaria infections are lifelong, incurable, recurring, and incredibly debilitating. Prevent, prevent, prevent!

Iyou, I agree that reveling medical information is not a good idea, but I also think the idea was quite clear: It's just pointing what who.int made a public information, just in case you are forced to help yourself , because you can NOT see a doctor in appropriate time. I would take it more like a first aid or, as it's written, " stand-by emergency ".
"Don't try it at home " applies to this issue also . |
