Chloroquine certainly is. I buy and take it (when I remember...).

The trade name for the one I get is Lariago-DS. It is a once-a-week pill.

Chloroquine: Lariago-DS Rs5.20 for a strip of five.

But you have to start taking it one or two weeks before leaving (I think?) and it is only one a week, so any saving on the UK price would probably be small.

Thanks for reminding to take mine!

Just a quick follow-up to this thread. The following site (i assume reputable) http://www.malariasite.com/malaria/malaria_india1.htm states that the Prophylaxis for travelers to most parts of India is Chloroquine + Proguanil. Yet as people have said in the replies above Proguanil is not widely available in India.
So my question is (if anyone knows) what is the effectiveness of taking Proguanil with Chloroquine? e.g. am i significantly more at risk if i take just Chloroquine?
It appears that Indians are not taking Proguanil if they are taking Prophylaxis - but i know this may not be reason not to take it, for they may have a high incidence of Malaria.

Lots of questions. Any advice? I'm Leaving in 4 days!!!

Chloroquine alone is not proper protection. The US recommend Doxycycline which is an antibiotic. The main side effect is increased sensitivity to the sun.

There is a lot of chloroquine-resistant malaria about in the world.

My local doctor said it was sufficient here. This may need revision when I move house to five miles away!
