Chikungunya in Tamil Nadu and Kerala in Dec/Jan

Hello,

we would like to travel to Tamil Nadu and Kerala from mid of december to mid of january.
Our tour goes from Chennai, down to Rameshwaram, threw Periyar and Munnar to the west coast and Cochin. After that down to Kovalam. A boat trip at the backwaters is also planed.

Do anybody know how it is at that time with Chikungunya?

Thanks
Bernd

I was there same time year, and had no problems. I did use mosquito spray during the day and early evening.

Last year there was a big outbreak in Delhi in Dec/Jan., if I remember correctly.

Hello bworld, welcome to the site

This is the sort of thing that I think cannot really be predicted in advance.

I'd just take all the normal mossie precautions and not worry too much.

Hello Nick-H,

you´re rigth, it isn´t possible to predict the situation in advance. But how is the situation now? All information i could get is from juli/august 2007 with a lot of new diseases in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Is the situation more relaxed today or is it similar to juli/august?

There was stuff in the newspapers at that time, yes.

I've been out of India for one month recently, and I'm in Chennai, not Kerala, so I'm not able to give an on-the-spot report anyway.

We'll have to hope that someone from that side posts...

There is no problem at the moment. Whenever there is, it is well covered in newspapers. If you don't find any news about chikungunya or viral fever in The Hindu it is safe to say that there are no outbreaks.
