Has anyone heard of this disease? My friend in Hospet, just came back from visiting A.P. having been sick with this for the past 3 weeks.
According to the Dr. 70% in A.P. have gotten this disease, and it takes 3 months to recover!?! I'm just trying to find out what the heck is Chicken Gunni?!?!?! Thanks. KariB |

I am an AP guy. What the doc would have meant was that 70% of his cases are of Chikungunya. Yes it is a big outbreak in Andhra Pradesh, mostly in areas surrounding Hyderabad and lesser in the coastal region. Chennai is also badly affected.
The word is Chikungunya...it is an African word. Chikungunya is a rare viral fever caused by a virus is spread by mosquito bites . The mosquito itself is a specific one and not any mosquito. The symptoms are pains in joints like arthiritis and high fever, headache or even conjuctivitis of the eye. There is no specific treatment for this disease and it will be gone in a few days. A couple of my friends n Chennai had it...they had crippling pain in their joints though the fever was not high or prolonged. It did not take them 3 months...just a week. They are all right now and in good health.

Sounds a bit like dengue fever, both in symptoms and transmission.
I find this fascinating...I've never heard of this disease before...so thanks for the info. Anyone know if there is a "season" for Chikungunya? It would seem obvious there are more mosquitos in the wet seasons, anytime else? Also, anyone know what the treatment for it is? |

season is whenever the mosquitoes are around.
which means pretty much anywhere which is warm and has stagnant water or other breeding grounds around it. also, domestic stored water and desert coolers are breeding grounds. and monsoons are good for mosquitoes, too. there is no treatment except immunity after suffering once. |
