Cervarix - is it approved in India?

Can anyone in India confirm to me that Cervarix (cervical cancer vaccine) is available in India through a doctor or pharmacy?

Your answer will decide if I can finally go to India for 2 1/2 months or end up staying here in Australia...

Thanks!

Edward - I'm 1/2 way through the vaccine schedule. Cervarix isn't approved everywhere and if it's not approved in India it looks like I'll have to stay in Australia to get my final shots.

My guess is that this is way too specialised/local for the forum, even for those with more than average medical knowledge.

Unless anybody here in India has a gynaecologist friend or relative who would answer the question?

Is this something that does not travel? does it need to be kept cool?

Thanks guys.

Unfortuntely it is something that doesn't travel well - it needs to be refrigerated and kept between 2 and 8 degrees, which is why I was worried about it.

It's a shame it's not approved yet. That means that my trip will probably be delayed until 2010.. At this point I wonder if I will ever get to India.

Do you have to have the second vaccine exactly on time? My roommate's father is a GYN and she received a similar vaccine here in the states (from him). She had her second dose a few months after the recommended time because she couldn't get time off of work to go home. I'm no doctor or anything - maybe ask your doc about it directly about your concerns to come up with some solutions. It would be a shame to miss if you didn't have to

Thanks for the reply!

Well, since I posted last night I am scheming about how I can do this. I have friends in Delhi who might be able to keep the vaccine in their fridge for me until it's time to take it mid way through my proposed trip. All I would have to do is get it past Indian customs in a refrigerated bag. I'm sure that the airline I fly on would keep it in their fridge for me if I asked.

I don't suppose anyone knows if I would have a problem getting a vaccine through Indian customs? I would have my prescription with me, but don't know the legalities of bringing in something that isn't approved in India yet. But from what I have read on this website, it's rare that customs would look through your bags in such detail.

I can't delay taking the vaccine by a few months however...as once I leave Australia I won't be returning to it...and after India I will be moving to ANOTHER country that hasn't approved it yet....it's all so complicated!

That's just what I wanted to hear Edward. Thanks!

Now I have just one more factor that needs to fall into place before I can finally be certain that I can go.
