Permethrin is preferred for pediculosis.

I don't know if they have it in India, though.

Guys forget using these

Guys,

You must be aware, mosquitoes here in india have developed resistance for all these ointments, spray etc..

The best would be to use a mosquito net!!! and dont let your body touch the net, else you know..

This is winter time, dont need to be scared of mosquitoes anyways.

Repellant is not something that they get resistant to.

Repellent is a misnomer: they mostly do not repel the insect, as, for instance, a rotten egg would repel us --- they attempt to confuse it by blocking its sense of smell so it is unable to detect our human smells.

Some of us seem to have smells that are pretty damn hard to mask

Some repellents work for some people, some, on some people are a total failure. Odomos mostly works for me; a few years ago on a Kerala trip I tried 'Autan' (UK trade name) and it was a complete waste of money

The formulation is similar to deet. See links below.

I'm pretty sure it is DEET.

Last time I looked DEET seemed to have a couple of chemical names. I have no idea on this stuff....

DEET stands for N, N diethyl-m-toluamide, it is the active ingrdient in Odomos.
It has a website of its own where you can get all the info that you need:

Some basic precautions to beat the mozzies :

Personal protection measures against mosquito bites.
Especially at dusk and dawn.
Use of DEET containing insect repellents - Odomos.
Permethrin impregnated bed nets and clothing.
Screened bed rooms (windows with mesh nets, etc)
Protective clothing (full sleeves, jeans etc)
Dengue fever epidemic reported in India this year. Take similar precautions.
Meet your physician regarding use of malaria tablets.
Treatment is started one week before and continued till 4 weeks after leaving the malaria zone.
Mefloquin Doxycycline and Malarone are used. Chloroquin may not be effective. Your doctor will decide this for you.
Stay safe and enjoy your stay in India.

Wink January Trip

Hi all,

the trip to Bombay, Kerala, Cochin, Delhi and Agra are all set. Its January in Kerala-are the mossies not on vacation too this time? I am a bit worried about the 22-hour houseboat trip, all that water, mossies and other flying creatures, also- should I take a lifebelt? I dont want to look lke a total twit wearing one if it is not necessary.

Is there any really breathtaking views in the places I am planning to visit?

What is the Bugatty Palace like?

What is the best time to visit the Taj?

Got a complete pack of anti-malarial tablets from Boots, priced at £17+ they are very expensive. Called Chloroquine & Proguanil 112 tablets, enough for my whole trip.I bought Boots insect repellant lotion with 50% DEET too for £6.19 a bottle. When I got home and checked the receipt though I realised that the cashier had not scanned the tablets but scanned the lotion twice, so instead of paying £23.50, I paid only £12.38
Shhhhhh

On the boat you can use the old fashioned (but effective) smouldering mosquito coils.

Bayer is a good brand and so is Good Knight.

You can plug in an electric pest repellant like the Tango personal health care 4 in one "oxygenerator'.
