having been in india a long time ago, we found most things only cost a fraction of what they are here in the uk. are some malaria related products not available in india ?

Just a clarification: Deet and permethrin are repellant and insecticide preparations respectively. They don't stop malaria directly.

If you want insecticides you can guarantee you will get strong ones. When we were in Varkala we were offered a Lindane compound in a chemist for eczema. Lindane is a carcinogen and is banned pretty much the world over.

Odomos is a deet equivalent that I have used satisfactorily. Permethrin, of course, should on be used on nets, etc..

Pretty sure that Odomos active ingredient is DEET.

Anyone know where I can Permethrin here? Trade names?

Cost of insect repellents

What about the cost of Deet products.

How do they compare to UK, should I buy them before I go?

Cheers

Well Rab, carcinogen or not, Lindane is widely available in India.
Doctors prescribe it to treat scabies.
Gammabenzene hexachloride is used as well.

The brand name for Permethrin cream here is Nomite.

Odomos is much cheaper than any preparations of DEET that you may find in the UK.

Where would I buy it? Medicals shop?

But what I would really want is not a cream --- I don't want to put this stuff on my skin --- but a spray or a wash for clothes and net. Can I get that here?

No spray that I know of.
But liquid yes.
Even anti-louse preparations like Mediker contain Permethrin.
So you could possibly dip the net in permethrin solution and leave it to dry.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get malarone either over the counter or w/ a US prescription in India? The cost for the tablets is outrageous here. I was thinking of getting just three for the 2 days before and the first day and then getting the rest in India. Don't know if it would be possible but would sure be a big help $$$wise.
