Question buying glasses in India

I'm traveling to India in August and was wondering whether it might be a good idea to buy myself a pair of prescription sunglasses once I'm there. Lenses are so expensive here in the States that I really can't afford a luxury like sunglasses, though I'd really like a pair for those blazingly sunny summer days. I can't wear contact lenses, so regular sunglasses are not an option.

Has anyone ever done this? Any ideas as to what I should expect to pay, and how long I might have to wait for my lenses to be ground? My prescription is quite weak, though I do have astigmatism in one eye.

rab started a great thread on this topic almost exactly a year ago. check here for a start:

I'll be bringing my prescription along this year too, or maybe have my eyes checked again anyway. I'll be staying in one place long enough that I'm not worried how long a new pair might take to get made, though.

Thanks for the link, m2!

Did anyone happen to see the frames that have a magnetic clip on sunglass on top in India? Anyone have recent experiences? According to the previous thread, the prices really vary . . .

Also, anyone know how much getting your eyes checked costs there?

It's interesting that someone said that you should ask that the lenses be centered to your pupils . . . I thought they always did that! (at least in the West . . .)

Thanks for the link! Very informative. I guess I'll shop around a bit once I get to Delhi.
