Buy Doxy in India, or Bangkok ?

Should I wait and buy malaria tablet - Doxycycline - when I arrive in India or does anyone know if I can buy the tablets at Bangkok Airport (I have a 3 hour stopover there). Figure it will be much cheaper than buying in Australia (Quoted $40 for 2 months worth). I'll be on the road for 4 months.

They say to start taking Doxy 2 days before. Will it make too much of a difference if I start upon arrival?

Cheers,

Lainz...........

Lainz, i'm no doctor but Doxy is an anti-biotic (at starting strength).
I've known Chloroquine (original malaria drug) and now Resis (for the new types of resitant strains of malaria).
(plasmodium vivax polymorphs or mutations or derivations)

The above are available anywhere - because WHO forces its use in tropical areas where malaria is wide spread.

(Dont take my word for it, check with a real doc.)

I'm no doctor either, but regarding whether you can start when you get there as opposed to 2 days before arriving , I would check with a Traveller's Clinic in your area just to be sure...We are taking Malerone and they told us that we had to start taking it the day before arriving in India in order for it to be effective..

Only if you get bitten in the first 2 days

Not knowing a place any better to post this:

But i am amazed to know that for a not so wealthy country, there are places with very sophisticated medical technology or medicine treatment.. or whatever it is called... that now people are going to India as 'medical tourists'
Really intresting...

I would go with neither : the normal regimen is one week before, 4 weeks after (check the masta link above, for example) .

For Doxy a couple of days is recommended.

"Doxycycline is a useful alternative for those who cannot take other antimalarials. You should start taking doxycycline a couple of days before entering the malarious area, continue during your stay and continue for 4 weeks after leaving."

My doctor has told us to start a week before ....she is telling us that Doxy is not needed in India and has recommended another type.... the name escapes me ??? ...

She said we will only need Doxy once we reach China ? .. we have to switch from the other malaria tablets a week before entering china.

Probably chloroquine and proganuil. Pharmacist at Boots said that or Doxy was OK. Do what your Doc tells you.

Quite right I spoke rashly. I still think the principle (start before and build up a healthy concentration) is the important thing , thou.

I hope you mean start the new and continue the old (doxy) 4 weeks after as stated in previous posts.

Freak out on Larium

yep malaria sure is a popular subject.

Any Aussies out there see the news lastnight about Army troops trying to sue the Army for making them take Larium back in East Timor days. Depression, psychotic episodes etc etc.

hhhmmmm...

Lainz' Decision

oh and BTW after extensive research I'm taking the safe road on this subject.....I'll take Doxy, buy enough to start me off before I leave and for first few couple of weeks once I get there then purchase the rest while I'm on the road.

Bring on the mozzies!
