Build Sauna in India for personal use

Hi all

I am relocating to IIT-KGP and would love to build an outdoor Sauna (2-4 person) for personal use in my backyard. Has anyone done this in India from the IndiaMike gang or seen one there? I think a charcoal fired one would work well. In the west we can buy pre-fab kits and install. I think it should be possible to build it there if we can find the right wood (say cedar or pine?).

Cheers

Doesn't look like we have any sauna builders here...

The ayurvedic people use steam cabinets: like a cupboard that you sit in with your head sticking out. It is a great experience.

In Chennai we just go for a walk in June: much the same experience, but without anywhere cooler for the head.

You could look into a Native American sweat lodge, can be applied pretty much anywhere.

For any serious DIY building inspiration, try this book: Shelter. Not available online, as far as I know.

Haven't really seen them in India, but these instructions might help you:

Hi Nattusbs

Did you find any supplier or any further info on Sauna. I guess Charcoal is not a good idea. It is normally a heating coil underneath few stones.

Some of the 5 star hotels have saunas built in - you might want to contact the GM to see how they organized the construction. Hyatt Regency in Delhi has a very good one that I've personally used .....

1. steam baths are usually more effective and health promoting.

2. Most of India turns into Sauna during summer, why build one?

Actually it is quite easy to install. I have seen few in toronto Gyms and at ome time I was about to install in the basement of mu house. But I am not sure how popular they are in India where it is quite hot in summer as CRVLVR said. In fact it is quite relaxing even in summer when you do it after a cold shower and you can repeat the cycle several times.

Looks to me that steam rooms are more popular in India.
