It's the bottling process and the qualitity of plastic used for the container that may well be more hazardous than the actual water itself. An extended shelf-life combined with the instability of certain plastics can cause consumption of some nasty chemical contaminants. So at least buy a well packaged product with a bottling date/expiry date clearly visible on the label.

But I don't think I've seen it here ...and what we buy (no idea what make it is even!) is Rs20 for twenty litres!!!

Well, I expected these answers but was just curious. I may be moving to India for a year or two and would certainly like to have a 'healthy' bottled water option for the first couple of weeks after I arrive as I adjust to the use and taste of filtered and boiled water, which seems to be the real solution. Perhaps I will just accept spending a small bundle, by Indian standards, at a specialty location in Mumbai, when I first arrive, for this introductory purpose.. If anyone else knows of any other brands besides Evian, Himalayan, and Vittel, which are known to be sound chemically and biologically, please mention, as of course, I'd like a more practical bottled water solution. Thanks.

Ah... a residential, rather than travelling, solution.

That would be to get your own Reverse Osmosis machine.

Filtering and boiling is far too cumbersome for day after day use in your own house.

You will also find that you build up immunity to your own area anyway.

By the way: You can trust "Pondichery" bottled water. I know that because it says so on the label!!!

Bacteria can be boiled away . Pesticides cannot be removed.

I've only bought it in Goa - Calangute supermarket on the main main street and in Arpora.

I'd say the best brands would be Aquafina or Kinley, manufactured by Pepsi and Coca Cola respectively. If you're gonna be staying in one place for a long time, why don't you get those Kinley water coolers? They come with 2 outlets, one for normal and another for cold water and a GIGANTIC 25 liter drum, which the company refills. I can help you out with phone numbers, addresses, costs, etc if you want.

Evian is too expensive and tastes really funny. I guess I'm just not sophisticated enough to appreciate the finer things in life.

To avoid spurious bottled water, the variety which has been refilled at taps and and is being re-sold illegally, avoid buying water from anything but a large store. DO NOT BUY WATER AT RAILWAY STATIONS.

Yes, it is better for visitors to take more precautions than residents --- but I've been easy about buying bottled water from small shops and restaurants for the past two years.

Actually, few visitors are as careful about these things as my native-born wife.
