body piercing health
Hello, i'm consider getting my lip pierced, but am traveling to Goa for an extended stay on Nov.14. Do you think there's a greater risk of me getting an infection? Any similar experiences?

Yes, I think there is a greater risk of infection. Save it until you get home.

Or before you go. Read the scary syringe thread on here. Then you'll understand better, I think.

My Mrs. who has one tells me it takes a while to heal yes.
So, increased chance of infections right there. Second the advice to do it (well) before or after. There's no great hurry, is there, you've probably managed for years without it (Another thing is, should you need to take it out there because of infections, it will probably close up again. Could be awkward if you want to open it up a second time later, I guess.)Regarding the chance of e.g. Hepatitis B infection, you'd want to have it done in a place or by someone who works hygienically, of course. (Well, and then most of my ear piercings were done by hand by my sister in the tropics... oh well Fewer weird diseases flying about in that particular place, though. & We were young and careless, and so on.)Again, the wiser among us would handle it a little more carefully, and certainly in more sensitive body parts! And then again I'm sure there's plenty of Indians getting piercings; but then they don't have much of a choice but to do it at home either. So if you do, then why not handle it in your own place. It is very true that the tiniest of cuts and scratches can get nastily infected in the tropics as it is.

I have had an infected mossie bite on my foot for the last two days. Whilst the infection was probably delivered by the mossie when it bit me, it does show how easily small things can blow up.
I understood that the poster was intending to get the piercing done before she comes. Mind you, I spent five weeks here just after having two dental implants done in UK some years back, although they did have time for basic healing before I left. |

Speaking as someone with a lip piercing, my guess is that if you get it done now and take good care of it, it will be healed by the time you leave in November. (The average heal time is about 6 weeks.) Like with ear piercings, the skin in the piercing will close up as it heals, making it less likely to become infected over time - provided you clean it and put saline on it during healing!
