Andhra government has responded saying there in no import of eggs nor birds from from other states and thereby no chance of this being spread and people should eat chicken as usual, the weekend consumption rate for chicken has fallen drastically though.

That’s impossible!!!! Just impossible, these heavenly foods cannot contain ANY germ.

But as a precaution West Bengal Animal Husbandry Dept has imposed a temporary ban on importing chicken from Maharashtra.

The Non-Story continues...

...with the front page headline in today's New Indian Express...

No case of human Infection so far

Actually, perhaps the newspapers would be more chearful if they took to generally reporting what isn't happening rather than what is.

But wait, here's a twist... As has been already said, while this remains a nonstory for people not working closely with poultry, it is an utter disaster to the poultry farmers, with tens of thousands of birds being killed (why: if they have a fatal disease, aren't they going to die anyway?).

What was I saying, Oh yes, the twist. On page 11 of the same paper is an advert, a statement from the NECC. That's the National Egg Co-ordination Committee (isn't it nice to know that our eggs are co-ordinated on a national basis: perhaps it can be a new Olympic sport?) of the All India Poultry Development Services Pvt. Ltd.. It is long, I'll just quote the first para (TBH I haven't even read it all)
Quote:
Media reports of incidence of bird flu in Nandurbar district of Maharastra have resulted in a lot of confusion and unnecessary panic among the poultry farmers ... ... ... NECC strongly refutes the reports of bird flu and would like to assure the farmers and the public that there is no bird flu in India and there is no reason for any panic
They go on to say that it is not possible to diagnose once the bird is dead, and that any vaccinated bird will test positive due to the vaccineand to claim that the disease already diagnosed by government scientists as somthing else entirely.

There is a lot more, no website, and even if I'd read it all I couldn't type it all.

of course, the Pvt. in the name may indicate that they are financialy motivated ---or not.

So what's true? What's just blind panic?

Anyone worried about bird flu in India? I leave in two weeks and my friends and students are freaking out, even crying, afraid I'm going to get it. Their reactions are freaking me out!

As for me, I'm not worried, but it's getting hard to deal with FearTalk.....
I'd be more worried getting smoked by a car or something, oh, but wait, the media doesn't frame that as a pandemic, even though a car-related death occurs every twelve minutes, one person is injured every eleven seconds, and 117 deaths occur daily. But if the media covered that, Ford would stop buying ad-space.

People should make a GOAL out of dying as the result of a "pandemics". Then you die a more famous and 'tragic' death that will cause alarm in society, rather than if you were hit by a speeding injury lawyer in his SUV at a marked crosswalk.

Funny story, that happened to my friend. And it was only his foot that got smoked. The result? 6 months of pain, 10 years of income

sex with chickens........

seems to be a lot of hysteria about this, it seems to me that most people who have caught this are in v close contact with poultry, so unless u plan to have an affair with a chicken dont worry...im off to india nxt week, ( hope these are not famous last words!! )

I am a little worried about it also...

I am going to Hydrabad at the end of May and I have taken precautionary measures and made certain that I am up to date on all of the recommended vaccinations and I also received a prescription for tamiflu - a viral medication that works against bird flu.

I have many friends in Hydrabad and according to them the majority of the people they know have stopped eating chicken. I plan on eating all veg while there - and using the prescription only if I believe I have come into contact with a bird possibly infected.

I would pick up some if I were you - you probably won't need it - and thankfully so....but who knows - better safe then sorry....

This whole hype about bird flue is just ridiculous! There is yet known no single case of man to man infection (don't know the right word in english)
I'll certainly not stop eating chicken. In contrary now that the prices are falling...

The thrust of the argument seems to be it could easily morph into something that is deadly and could spread from person to person.
Surely all flus have the ability to do this????????

Nice one for the makers of Tamiflu though! Is it made in Tamil Nadu

I think I'd be worried too if my handle was fly2raven

Don't think a vaccine is much good. I read that the virus has already mutated to 2 strains

not ridiculous...why would it be ridiculous?

Yeah - the only handle I have ever used - gosh - close to 15 years now...how time flys when you are having fun

I don't think that trying to be cautious about the bird flu is ridiculous..with the current death rate in humans - not many survive - if it did start spreading from human to human millions would die....much much worse then the black death and other plagues throughout the history...

And - I was watching a documentary on it one evening and it showed a very disturbing case of a nurse in Vietnam that was never in contact with fowl...but took care of bird flu patients...and he got sick too....

like I said - better safe then sorry...
