| Bird flu in India http://www.ndtv.com/template/templat...18799&callid=0 Anyone worried about bird flu in India? I leave in two weeks and my friends and students are freaking out, even crying, afraid I'm going to get it. Their reactions are freaking me out! ![]() As for me, I'm not worried, but it's getting hard to deal with FearTalk.....

| People don't stop to think how big India is. Lots of other diseases to worry about before bird flu. I do understand that this might, one day, become a worldwide lethal menace, but it does seem to me that it's current status is media-scare. I would guess that more people will die in london over this winter from plain, ordinary flu than will die worldwide from "bird flu". But that is no longer news. |

| One Billion people in India.... God knows how many chickens also.... I have not heard any reports of people/chickens/other-avians dying of H5N1. Hmmmm..... something tells me i should check the net..... And yes! News got internetted !! First reported case of H5N1 in India kills 30,000 birds [chicks] in Navapur. Anyway, don't enter a chicken coop...... don't eat one....... We all live here, none of us are reported dead due to H5N1 yet. If you ask me, the chances of being killed in a road accident are better than H5N1 death....

but of course, people listen to the fear-mongers of the media and go ballistic. As comedian Wanda Sykes said, it's about controlling people with fear. "ooooooh, somethin' gonna happen.....don't know what, but somethin' gonna happen..." | |

| When I was in UK last year the BBC News headline item one day was "Parrot dead...". Monty Python Lives. So disease is now being treated like politics.... we have a long, long "what if" buildup to everything. Tedious. Everyone was supposed to be dead a couple of years back from some illness that was coming from China (mental pictures of everyine cancelling trips and running around in masks): now I can't even remember what it was called. Oh, SARS --- that's the one. |

| Which bird flew?!!! Jokes apart, it may be serious to the chickens and those who come into contact with them but not to the rest of the population that can live without worrying about it's effect on them. It is an alarming rate as the countries it is spreading to in the world increases day by day. Hope they soon have an anti virus shot for it too. Cheers, Aadil.

| My Prof. says that this new Bird Flu hype is all about making people in developing countries poor (by killing all of their chickens), so that they have to replenish their stocks by buying western, pumped-full-of-drugs chickens.

"Eat chicken, no need to panic," was the advice that Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss late on Sunday night as he maintained that the situation arising out of the outbreak of bird flu in Navapur, Maharashtra, was totally under control. He, however, said the source of the outbreak has not yet been ascertained as the government was now focusing on containing the deadly disease from spreading. "Rapid response teams have been rushed to the affected areas in Maharashtra. We have quarantined the entire area and the first phase of culling of three-to-five lakh chicken has begun," Ramadoss said. He said only three birds have been tested positive for H5N1 strain till now and arrangements have been made to vaccinate poultry in the affected areas of Navapur tehsil of Maharashtra's Nandurbar district and Surat district in Gujarat. "People need not panic. It is safe to eat a chicken after heating it for 20 minutes or 70 degree centigrade," Ramadoss said. Read more..... ![]()
