Bio Gas from Cow Dung

A very interesting article, Understand the same thing can be done in rural India. Most probably petrol companies an other multinationals are not very much interested in such kind of things.

Have a look: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4271820.stm

IT IS being done in rural India.

at least my relative who's got a few cows managed to set it up. It goes by the name Gobar Gas in India

A few relatives had gobar gas in the late 1980s. They have cylinder gas now. They said the gobar gas set up stopped working. I never understood why it would stop working as water buffalo muck is still the same.

I've seen it working in rural Goa too, The farmers were very keen to show me how it worked. It looked like basically the dung is collected & put into a big domed tank partially buried under ground,( which is probably somehow pressurised) with just a valve on the top. As it ferments the valve is opened & the methane piped to a kitchen stove,,,,,,,,,,,
Very simple but very efficent.

It can stop working

In the beginning they promoted bio gas --- method in which the gas was collected in a metal drum and rise and fall and give pressure to gas to burn in kitchen.Thi s was put on a guiding pipe covering a well of cow dung slurry.Whrn you put in days slurry equal amount will go out and gas will be produced and collecte in the metal drum and the pressure makes it goes up and give the pressure to have same flame in the kitchen .Here there are problems of corrodig as well as the tank gettin g leak .

Later there was another model is like a dome under the ground level and only entry and exit slurry pipes were out .This also worked well initially later the solid subbstances in dung made a coating over the sluurrry and gor the gas it fionds difficult to brek,In many cases you have to clean and restart it

In some cases there is damage to exit and entry pipes and they are of low quality asbestos cement pipes .

Still if you can afford to maintain it -- it is a good thing -- we have it here with all the problems and good ness ofi t

there's a big experiment going on about 70 miles to the west of me.

I'd read the biogas scheme in India had a lot of failures due to misappropriation of subsidies.

why do the villagers need "bio gas" when they can just burn the dung instead?

crvlvr - my understanding is that aside from being a renewable resource and reducing greenhouse emissions, using the biogas is healthier. burning wood/dung in a household causes respiratory ailments.

It's called progress,,,,,,,
Cooking on a enamel stove with a nice blue ring of flaming gas is far superior to any wood or dung burning fireplace.

Yes on all counts. Respiratory ailments are a HUGE problem where people burn wood/dung. And they are deforesting like crazy all over Asia & Africa where villagers use every bit of wood they can find. Nepal has catastrophic floods every year due to erosion from deforestation. Renewable resources are needed worldwide....biogas is a good idea for villages in India. Maybe it can be perfected to not break down. India has people with the smarts to do it, the government just needs the will.
