Belly issues in Bombay

Hi all,

I am in Mumbai this week, and have been eating like a king and enjoying the heck out of myself. This morning I have a bit of the runs (not bad at all) but feels like it's getting worse. I have pepto with me, but are there any local soothers I could be on the lookout for?

Thank you!

"pudin hara" is something you can try...

You have most likely contracted a GI bug and pepto won't cut it. I usually go to the local pharmacy and get a dose of Norflox and taking it 2 times a day for 5 days does the trick. Should run you around Rs40. This is an antibiotic so if by chance you have amoebiasis instead Norflox won't be any help. In my case though, it has always been a bacterial infection that was the source of my woes. You may want to see a doc to have him/her make a diagnosis based on your symptoms. All the best.

I do think it is excessive to hit the anti-biotics on account of one day of the runs, unless you have fever etc.

Yeah, I'm not sure I want to hit the antibiotics right away. I have cipro with me, but I don't think I'm sick enough yet to take it. I was more looking for home remedies for the issue ...

Hello
You want to try Diarex from Himalaya. Heals Giardiasis and Ameobasis and fixes loosies pronto - if you pop two tablets. The beauty of this medicine is:
1. Does not cause constipation the next day or many days and make your mind foggy and knees wobbly unlike others
2. Not an antibiotic its Ayurvedic
3. You can pop one tab a day like a prophylactic if you suspect a problem and binge
4. No side effects from regular use

I use it regularly. Trust me.

Cheers

Yeah, sorry to jump the gun a bit but by now I can tell when it is actually a GI bug and I learned the hard way about letting my body try to fight it off and landed in the hospital after stubbornly refusing to take antibiotics after just one day. But I also had vomiting which made it impossible to keep the meds down and sped up the dehydration process.

So I guess I would revise my previous suggestion to include trying natural remedies or letting your body fight it off, but don't wait for things to get too bad before breaking down and taking antibiotics.

Just found this and thought I'd share.

This is what the CDC recommends:
"Travelers who develop three or more loose stools in an 8-hour period---especially if associated with nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever, or blood in stools---may benefit from antimicrobial therapy. "

Also, be careful about taking immodium or anything that treats the loose stools without addressing the causative agent if you have fever or other symptoms.

The CDC says:
"However, these agents should not be used by travelers with fever or bloody diarrhea, because they can increase the severity of disease by delaying clearance of causative organisms. "

The link is here.
