Doxycycline

Hi, i will be in India for 3 months from Oct-Dec. Obviously i will be taking all of the necessary innoculation, which is proving to be a bit more expensive than i first imagined. The price i have been quoted for these anti-malaria tablets are 1 euro each, and when you take into account that you have to take them for another month after you get home, this adds up to approx 120 euro. I have read on the Lonely Planet India forum that these can be bought over the counter in the major cities in India, however some say that there is always a doubt if you are receiving the correct medication. What are peoples thoughts on this, do you purchase the full amount of the medication in your home country before leaving, or only buy a fraction of it and the rest in India and take the risk.
This is my first post on this site so go easy with me.

Welcome to India, susvaagatam!!

doxycycline....

Strip of 10 tabs (100mg each) is avlble for rs 30 to 40 average. Your 120 tabs should cost less than Euros 10. The reputed manufacturers are : Lyka Labs, Zydus Cadila, USV, Micro Labs, Plethico. Different brand names.... just tell the chemist you want it from any one of these Companies. Some of them are exporting to the US and the same stuff is sold here. Read the mfg. date and expiry date very carefully before putting your money on the counter.

Was this "easy" enuff, dear "first time" poster?

Suggest go to a doctor to get the exact name of the medicine, as all the names are different... the constituents remain the same- but am yet to hear of a friend of mine remembering the salt in the medicine!! As a thumb rule medicines & health care in India are cheaper than in the west- had a tooth pulled out for INR 100- USD 2!!! My dentist would have done the same for min. 100....
