I can understand your anger, the letter from 'H' is ridiculous and insulting.

But I believe English isn't his first language and he's probably trying too hard to appeal to others because he's desperate.

But taking little responsibility for his actions, whilst insulting a country is a strange way to appeal to people.

But try to remember that Noodle has done nothing wrong, she's only trying to help a friend she's worried about.

(BTW, I'm a Thatcherite, and not too big on compassion)

Yes - but that does not make the last sentence of your post above any more acceptible, IMO.

btw, it surprises me that anyone even considers smuggling one joint from countries that have strict laws and poor prisons... 4Kg is asking for trouble. As you say, I'm surprised that none of these guys have seen Midnight Express.

I see your point.

But he's very desperate and emotional, I don't think 'normally' he would say something like that.

As a friend I forgive him already. But maybe I should delete his letter as people here don't know him and it reflects badly on him?

Offtopic, again:

My problem, too.

But come to think of it, is it a problem? Would be hell of a boring world if everybody agreed on everything

I disagree with you capt, there are so many law abiding people in India who do not even get the basics (I will reserve my compassion for them and if I have anything more I will be happy to share that for others.) This is the fundamental problem in the western world, they spend millions of $ on people who don’t deserve and they forget the people who realy need the help.

The letter can be seen as insulting for sure but I detect the desperation and anxiety that must have taken over in this guys life. Talk of I told you so, what did you expect, are absolutely valid Mal. I haven't a single word that would dispute that with you.
However the conditions in Indian prisons are such that one could easily start to think of any sentence as a death sentence. A foreign culture, mixed with a criminal population HAS to be hard to take, for anyone.

So I think all the opinion, views and pleas are valid. We don't have to make a case for who's right or wrong! Holds the moral high ground or whatever.

This is a human drama, being played out on a public forum.
Opinions will differ!

That is why friends and family are for, but to expect the same compassion from a third person is not going to happen, and in India where there is more than one billion people suffering has a different meaning.

I didn't expect it from you guys. And I totally respect the different opinions here. Even though I differ, and would also differ if he wasn't a friend of mine.

I posted it more out of the feeling that people should know about the conditions in that prison (since that was the threads original question) and as a kind of warning, like I said, to anyone who reads this and might harbour such plans - don't do it! It's just sheer stupidity.

Just out of curiosity: how long would a sentence for this crime be in Europe or the US? Does anyone know?

Dunno about Europe or the US, but in some countries the penalties may be much more severe.

Just as an example,
"Singapore imposes the death penalty on anyone convicted of trafficking in more than 15g of heroin, 30g of morphine, 1.2 kilograms of opium, 500g of cannabis, 200g of hash or 30g of cocaine"

From http://www.cannabisculture.com/backi...96/ssbody.html

Should point out that Singapore has the highest number of executions per capita, worldwide. Most for drug related crimes.

And, the sentence is mandatory.

A couple of joints is stupidity. A couple of kilos is greed. You would get a long sentence in Europe for that amount too (OK, the conditions would be way better). The UK courts take into account a 'smokable quantity' and are very lenient with people caught with 'personal use' amounts. As I said previously, you could never argue that a quantity measured in kilos is anything other than dealing.

Just to quote a little from the guy's letter ... "I was caught in possession of 4 kg's of Cannabis Sativa, which is considered illegal." It sounds like he did not consider it illegal, which I suppose is gross stupidity. But I find that very hard to believe.
