Hello Peaky,

I can only understand a bit about the conditions in Indian prisons. I am involved in a prison ministry in New York, USA. A friend of mine is in for life. I see only a little of what goes on at this particular prison and pray that what goes on behind the gates is not what I fear. I do know that it is Nothing! like your dear love's situation. I will be in Chennai in January and so wish I had the time to go visit him. Next year, if he is stil there, I will make it a point to try to see him.

I will be praying for you, for your dear love and for your family.

Peace,
Lindakka

Get the diplomats moving

Peaky,
Get the Embassy/Consulate involved. Right NOW.
Legal assistance and material assistance , if routed via the Embassy, will help the comfort level of the inmate climb up a few notches.

Follow up the Embassy involvement with a simple letter/fax/e-mail from your Parliament Representative to the Embassy seeking to know your brother's welfare.
As recomended here before, a family member around will help get things moving fast.

Good luck n lets know the good news soon.

This thread is from May last year, and the original poster hasn't logged in since June, hopefully all ended well.

The guy inside is my friend. Unfortunately he is not out yet, his trial just started this week. The charge is pretty trivial but that doesn't seem to make much difference as it has taken 10 months for his trial to start. The hope is that he will be out in 8 months.

Has anyone any experience of what this prison is like. I am fully prepared that the conditions there are going to be dire, but do you think there might be any other Western people in there with him. He has some money on him so I think he might be able to buy food can anyone confirm this?
We are all doing everything we can to get him out of there and I am positive that this will happen. If anyone has any experience of this prison and the way things operate there then please let me know
Thank you.

I don't understand all of you, besides the odd case, where an innocent man has been sent to jail, everyone else is a criminal.

If you are stupid enough to do the crime and think that you can get away with a slap on the wrist and especially in India, WAKE UP!

The conditions that criminals face in India is brought on by themselves, and I think that the horrendous conditions of the prisons in India is a great deterrent to keep a population of a billion in control.

Doesn't matter where your from, India doesn't need anymore criminals, stay home or rot in our jails.

Just a word of cheer, at least in the case of the US, the consular officers rarely get involved in these cases. Don't get caught must be the motto..

Don't think I ever met a man with so much faith in the Indian police and judical system!

If anyone had suggested otherwise in this thread then that would be good advice. As far as I can see they haven't. So why don't you save this sort of advice for, eg, one of those "why shouldn't I overstay my visa if I want to" threads trhat crop up from time to time.

The conditions in any jail are down to the people who run the jails. If punishment was a detterent, the world's jails would be empty. Regretably they are very far from it.

True, but hardly appropriate advice to these two women, neither of whom have broken the law, neither of whom are in prison, and both of whom have plenty to worry about.

The 'victims' of crime include, in a sense, the family and friends of the criminal. Let the criminal be punished, by all means, but let us not attack his family too.

Hello Akiko, as far as I know, peaky has moved on and is not following the case (I could be wrong but I have had no contact with her for the last year). Her boyfriend is one of my best friends, so I have been keeping track of his case as best I can! He is still there, it has been almost a year and a half.

I have been told that many other people inside who have good lawyers have been let out (some of them with more serious cases), so there is hope. A problem is the time for a case to start, my friend waited months before being charged, and his case is only just starting to end.

Any letter you send will be read by guards, so don't write anything about the case. Books and magazines etc may be taken before they reach your ex boyfriend.

I hope your ex is okay, make sure he has good lawyers that can be trusted.

Hi Akiko! Are you still reading here?

I have a friend who was sent to Arthur Rd jail some months back, he is German ... I'm also German, I live 3 hours drive from Bombay. I think he's the person you describe, your ex boyfriend. Do you have any news? Has he been sentenced already? How is he coping? I'm worried about him ... I know one guy here who sends him money and food (I think), but haven't talked to him in a while. If you are still coming here to this forum please let me know how he is.

All the best, Noodle

...although she only ever made the one post, if you check her profile it says Last Activity: November 22nd, 2006 02:44 AM.

So it looks like she drops in from time to time and might see your post.

You could try sending her a Private Message. If she is still at the e-mail address she registered from, she will receive a notification that the message is waiting for her.

Easiest way to do that is to click on her name in the above posting, then select Send a private message to Akiko Minematsu from the drop-down menu.

Hope you guys manage to get in touch and can be some help to each other....
