Apollo Hospital

Hey everybody. Sellin' my place and thinkin' of going to Apollo having a hernia fixed and getting a full checkup to find out if I need to build a new house or just get a short term lease. I have three reasons, I have heard that the cost is 1/3 of the costs in the states and if they find anything I can avoid the dreaded 'pre-existing condition’, which means nobody in the US will ever insure you. The third reason is that I'm an adventure junkie and I'd love to bike to Nepal.

Has anybody heard good or bad about Apollo? If it’s all good then I may even ask them about eye laser surgery. If it’s not good, I'll check Thailand.

On another note, I've climbed in Alaska, kayaked white water in Costa Rico and traveled between the two by motorcycle, but ya'll are scaring the hell out of me with all this germ talk. Don't worry, I'm not scared enough to not come,. But I've had Montezuma's revenge moren once in Mexico and it wasn't fun and I'm thinkin' India may be worse. Don’t get me wrong, ya gotta die from something, but the big D is a tough way to go.

What do ya’ll think about Apollo

Thanks
MeCasa

MeCasa,

Where r getting urself operated ?

Apollo hospitals group has hospitals in Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. They are among the best in India, but, as per Indian standards, they are expensive. But, their work is also good. You will be happy with their service.

You can consider other hospital options, depending on which city you are in.

Regarding ur adventure - i dunno if Nepal is safe with all the Mao trouble there.

Apollo is a good hospital. However if you are in Goa I recommend Vintage. Several of my friend have used this place and found it to be better than apollo for minor surgery.

.......and Goa. I know a few people who have had the full day check up with all the tests etc. They get a comprehensive print out they can take home if they want.

Well.. I have been to Apollo hospitals in Delhi and Bangalore. The one in Delhi is much much better. You can expect excellent hospitality and services. It is one of the best hospitals in India.

Take care...

I've been communicating with Indraprastha Apollo in Delhi, I didn't even know there was others.
http://www.apollohospdelhi.com/about-us/index.html

But I would consider others.

I thought Delhi would be good because I need to buy a bike and I think Delhi has good choice and it's up north and winters coming quick and I'll have a head start north.. I've got gear and can handle the cold, but I don't want to get caught in snow up in high country.

PS I thought that the Maoist problem had died down

I second the post above. I get regular check ups at Apollo in New Delhi and its among the best but do expect to pay relatively more than other hospitals here.

Thumbs up Hi

Hi,

Apollo is one of the best in India. The success rate in these following hospitals is also very high.

Not to be a wet blanket. If you have any pre-existing allergies or something like that, it's best that /YOU/ make sure it's entered in your case sheet.

My school teacher died last week because he was given a full penicillin shot by mistake. He had been admitted for a stroke and the allergy was not listed on his medication sheet. he passed away in a lot of pain. The real tragedy was this, he was a perfectionist, a man who was studiously careful in his lectures and lessons in that uniquely wonky teacherly way and his life was taken by sheer carelessness by some idiot hospital staff.

If there is a God.....that was not funny, scumbag.

your treatment is only as good as the doctor. Make sure you go witha doctor who comes with a personal recommendation. Many priivate doctirs use the Apollo facilities and are quacks.

And, what was the question about building a house?

MeCasa, Apollos approximately charge you 3 or 4 times than it does in a 'good' private hospital in India. You may consider those as an alternative.

After hearing ya'lls comments I believe Apollo/Delhi is a good choice, however I may see if I can get a staff doctor even if it costs a mite more. I've already been negotiating with them by email, but I'm fixin' to break down and move to the telephone to expidite the process

Can't do a damn thing until the docs check me out, if they say 6 months, don't need a house. Whiskey and Wimmen' is the only option

That would help a lot, although I'm an old hand at long haul, this will be my first trip off Norte America and India can be intimidating especially after reading the 'Health and Well Being' Board

EDIT:

I realize that Apollo may be expensive by India standards but they are a lot cheaper than the US, one good point is that they are extremely well versed in dealing with foreigners and have the latest in MRI equipment and such because they have deep pockets
