Anxiety and Malaraia medication

After coming to this site, my paranoia over malaria has leaped to a higher level. I planned on going to the Rajasthan area in early December(last minute trip from Bangkok). Before looking at the posts on this site I planned to simply use deet and be cautious. Now the "better safe than sorry" message has been embedded in my brain raising questions. I've taken Doxycycline which doesn't seem like a good option if you want to step outside in the daylight. And originally decided not to take the other meds for malaria because I have heard people like me who are on anti-anxiety drugs should stay away due to bad mental side affects. Know these types of posts are extremely popular but still any feedback or suggestions?

dont be paranoid - do be careful

i travelled six months in india, one month n.paki, six weeks nepal -not rainy season and note geography. no problems and no meds. i will say though, i do take proper precautions and was not in south.

for you i do think better safer than sorry as this is a holiday. you did not say how long. you really dont have many 'healthy' options. i should add many meds are no longer effective either. i dont thnk doxy is effective ag fulciparium. anyone???

gypsy: you are thinking of fansidar, doxy is a general antibiotic. it can make you light sensitive.

what to consider: where you go, duration, type of room -
wear long clothes at night, sleep screened in or under a net (tuck the net in), use deet.

Stay away from Larium which I believe is the source of your concerns. The others have different characteristics and differ in effect from person to person. I groove on Doxy but another person might not. Malarone is good but expensive. Use the search function for tons on this topic..

I would agree to stay clear of Larium, which I have not taken but heard can cause psychological problems. I took doxy and so long as you follow the docs. directions, ie take with food, else you will get nauseous, you should be fine. Don't risk getting malaria, it is a horrible disease which can wreck your life.

I'd consult your doctor if you haven't already about mixing the two drugs. Maybe he/she could tell you if there'd be a reaction like that

the original question mentioned traveling to Rajasthan. I don't think there's much Malaria there, but I could be wrong.

As far as bad mental effects, I drilled my doc about this and he said that the only one that you needed to be concerned about was Larium.

Yeah, I must say be careful with Larium, I took when I was in Africa but ended up giving it away as I had really bad nightmares about killing people etc it scared the hell out of me TBH I never bothered with Anti malaria drugs in India and was ok for over a year, but maybe I was just lucky

Funny though, the link I put up earlier says chloroquine is not effective for India, yet the pharmacists I've spoken to here say chloroquine/proganuil is OK I'm considering Doxy but I burn easily. Have to stay in the bar I suppose

i forgot

most antibiotics are worthless in asia these days for malaria - check the cdc site. so you might be stuck with fansadar (larium).

but...you cannot drink ANY alcohol while on antibiotic and if you do not only will the meds not be effective, you will build immunity. you can build lifetime immunity as well. you have to be very careful with drugs.

i think your best options may be Chloroquine & Proguanil as 70s stated.

I've never had an antibiotic which stated no alcohol on the labelling, although I have heard what you're saying.
