Antibiotics OTC
My wife and I will be taking a month long trip to India beginning in January and have read that some antibiotics on hand may be helpful for travel illness and malaria. We will be in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Pushkar, Udaipur, Mt. Abu, Jodhpur, Bikaner. Although we plan on purifying all water and being very careful about where and what we eat, I think some immediate access to some antibiotics would be prudent. Can anyone give a name of a clinic they would reccommend in any of these places other than Delhi?
Is it possible to buy Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline, and Tinidazole over the counter in Delhi? Or is a prescription always necessary? If they are sold OTC what are the brand names there? We will be using a Steripen to purify our water, are vegetarian, and will wash our fruit with our purified water and peel it. We are truly excited about visiting this most incredible country and we look forward to experiencing these places and people.: |

Most medications can be obtained over the counter without a proscription ,but a better way ,if you do hit any problems is find the local doctor and he/she can test and provide the correct medication
PS ....the service is usually very good & quick and the cost is bearable . |

I usually schedule a visit to the travel clinic before heading to India. Every time they've prescribed some emergency Cipro which I have yet to need. Another good item to add to your med kit is Imodium. Very handy as a cork in the event your rear loosens up while in transit. The Steripen works very well. Go to a travel clinic for qualified advice.

Whilst stuff is available without prescription, the closest thing to an offical site policy...
Well, we don't have an official policy, but if we did... It would be... Doctors are easily accessible and cheap to consult; please do not self-prescribe. Unless you are headed for rural/village/etc areas, you do not need this kind of 'emergency kit'. If you are heading to such places, then the opposite is true!

Also, be aware that a large portion of the drugs sold in India are counterfeit.. So, make sure you buy from a reputable retailer..
