Rob the Pom what is 'Mumbai Quickstep'?. If it's another name for Dheli Belly then that would explain why I am spending a lot of time in the small room.
Thing is I can't get alternative tablet until I finish work tomorrow night, and then don't know if it's safe to swap from one medication to another i.e; will I still be protected against malaria. I am definately going to see my G.P on Tuesday morning to see what he says as, leaving the psoriasis aside, I am concerned about the link between these pills and depression. I suffered from that years ago - and it's not an experience I would like to repeat in a hurry. Funny thing is, no one mentioned this to me before I came on IM. This site, and it's members, are worth their weight in gold. Thank God I found it.

Hamanda, why don't you go and see a specialist in India? They have far more experience dealing with malaria than any of the doctors in the UK or anywhere else for that matter.

Where in India are you going to? That can be relevant to whether you even need to take them. |

I am going to Salem, which I believe is a few hours from Bangalore. I don't think that this is a 'high risk' area - and I am beginning to think that there is probabley more chance of suffering side-effects to meds than there is of me getting malaria.

I have no idea about that part of India to be honest, but please seek expert advice.
Best of luck, Rob |

Unfortunately, chloroquin is no longer effective in India and it is recommended not to take it, as it has become useless.
real shame, I used to take it many years ago.Read more: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/regionalmalaria/indianrg.htm |

I recently read of a study that found that a derivitave of the wormwood plant to be much more effective that chloroquin, which also has much less side effects.
Lets hope turns out to be as promising as it sounds: http://medicine.plosjournals.org/per...l.pmed.0020190

Hi there,
I began taking Larium (the once a week drug) and began to feel really strange. I didn't want to interact with people, I didn't sleep at all. I took the second pill just before leaving and was violently ill (vomiting) for a day. I talked to a pharmacist who said her husband had an awful, amost psychotic reaction and personally she felt the side-effects were much higher than reported. I switched to Doxycycline when I arrived in India and was fine with that. I just used sunscreen, which I would have used anyway. I am somewhat suspect at being given a pill (I am quite small) that has the same dose as one that is given to a 200 pound man. When I go back to India this time I will stick with the Doxy. I also never got any form of Delhi-belly. I don't know if this was just luck or a the effects of having a mild anti-biotic in my system. Do a bit of research (by asking professionals, not just advice on a thread) before deciding on what you will take but don't stress too much over it. Have a great trip!! |

22 and 23 please read on : Chloroquine in combination with Proguanil is still considerd a viable preventative by the WHO, though not by the American FDA which is why you won't find this info on a site like the CDC which is American!!!
Artimisin or Wormwood, ism, until now only for use in the treatment of Malaria, not in the prevention of it, though Indian scientists among others are trying to produce a preventative from the wormwood plant, so far with no success! |
