slow pathetic death by malarial parasitic infection
Whoa! It is curable!

Unless you fail to diagnose the strain that affects the brain, in which case you could be dead in a week.

Either way: no slow death!

btw I've heard of such research, Nick. Let's just hope it leads to something.

Yes... (1 to 3 million deaths annually actually, I read, or at least 1 death every 30 seconds, with children under 5 years taking the brunt, on 400-900 milion affected cases total.) I'm afraid in some parts such numbers don't amount to much, economically or otherwise

Yes, Goa or its press may not really be at the forefront of it all. That page WWU provided goes quite a bit beyond that, to take a more global view. According to some reports, Africa seems to weigh in at 90% of the death toll.

Having just returned from India I want to throw my two-cents worth of experience in on this discussion in the hopes that a newbie to IndiaMike.com will find it useful.
My husband and I traveled with his parents, brother and his fiance's Indian family to Hyderabad just a couple of weeks ago. We were told by our travel clinic that malaria isn't bad in Hyderabad so taking malaria medication wasn't a must. My husband and parents-in-law chose to take medication anyway. My parents-in-law took malarone and had no obvious side effects, and my husband and I took the once-a-week mefloquine treatment and had mild nausea and of course the vivid dreams. We haven't, however, had any negative psychological effects (as far as we can tell - 3 more weeks to go on the mefloquine). We also used permethrin on our clothing and carried 34% DEET bug cream and didn't get any mosquito bites.
However, my brother-in-law didn't take his malaria medication properly, nor did he use bug cream. At almost the end of our trip he got very ill and was hospitalized. Though he tested negative for malaria twice, the doctors were convinced that's what he had and put him on malaria meds anyway. He has mostly recovered but is still pretty weak.
It's a personal decision of whether to take malaria medication or not, but please get all the facts before you go. If you choose to not take any medication you could be perfectly fine, but there's always a chance your gamble could backfire.

Good post indeed. I also caught the big m in Hyderabad. There is an underreporting factor as well. I know that nobody bothered doing such in my case as I was treated at home (the advantage of having a doctor in the family)..
