Last thing I heard was a potential vaccine, showing good results in early tests somewhere in Africa --- I think research is being done.

I believe malaria kills 100,000 people annually. That must be quite an economic impact --- and, sadly, it is economics that tends to spur action these days.

Don't bet money on it till the trials are complete Nick. The malaria is sophisticated like AIDS and evolves. The interesting part is how we seem to be losing the battle against disease organisms and resistance..

It's a very new thing, so I don't think anyone is betting!

Yes, the malaria thingy has developed resistance to some drugs, but it is a very complex organism compared to a virus, so I'd guess it finds evolution rather more challenging. Chloraquine has been around for a long time, I think.

Hey, I'm no scientist

You just haven't been looking. Have a look at the Gates Foundation website which I opened to see what they'd done in 2007.

It'd be nice if he threw as much cash as he has into making the windows operating system half-decent, instead of taking it out of our pockets with perpetual 'upgrades'.

But yes, he does do some good work with his ill-gotten gains.

Malaria and all other vacinations...????

A lot of people have been telling me they didn't take the anti-malaria pills. They said that Deet(sp?) and a misquito net work.

I'll be in India in February and March, 2008. I'll be in the South and the North mainly, and also up to Kathmandu. Also I am told I need Typhoid, Hep A, Adult Polio, and Tetnis shots. It sounds like I can't go without those. The travel clinic also told me I might need rabbies pills amongst all the other stuff. I don't want to damper my system with pills. Anyone have any ideas or alternatives?

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Errr, yes... please read the multitude of other threads in which you'll find this subject covered many, many times.

Why do think the answer we're going to give you will be any different?

Have you even read this thread?

Welcome to the site, by the way. You'll find its a friendly place where we don't jump on newbies for asking daft questions, but please do some searching before you ask this one

Er... gin & tonic is a very old recipe against malaria only, from the days of colonialism when there wasn't anything else around & people would just hope for the best, and I'm not even sure if tonic today has any amount (or that amount) of quinine in it.

Take your meds or don't, but fooling around with prehistoric medicine... well, whatever.

As suggested above, please search around this site some to find all the answers to confuse you even more than your doctor might, then make up your mind, never forgetting to consult the latter.

with all of the negatives being volleyed back and forth over anti-malarial treatments, please allow my two cents: i have chosen to take my tabs like a good boy. although it could be argued that i possess enough paranoia/psychosis/depression, etc, etc, etc, without any (possible) Mefloquine-istic enhancements - i have no doubt that being in Coorg for some time would put me at greater risk without said treatment. this choice will not be right for everyone, however.
so let me see....paranoid hallucinogenic suicidal psychosis or slow pathetic death by malarial parasitic infection....(i know, i'm stretching it but what the hell). there are extremes on either side of this issue.
my choice was made through a combination of independant study; medical consultation and by asking real-live people who have taken it (and lived to tell about it...unfortunately I couldn't ask anyone who did not)
the volume of 'information' makes one's head swim with confusion. may everyone employ balanced reason and sound judgement in determining the right choice for themselves.

to be on the safe side i have instructed my crew to tie me to the mast and stop their ears....just in case
