Amritsar - Good Idea? Bad Idea?
I've dossed around India on one or two occasions and am not put off going at all by the current events which may or may not happen in Pakistan or Afghanistan.
However, this trip Amritsar is on my list, I've never been up there before and I must confess my ignorance regarding the likely attitude of the locals in the event of any Afghan-bashing by George W. Any views on whether or not to go to Amritsar would be appreciated. P.S. Excellent website - none of the cliquey crap you get on L.P. |

Go for it
I would go. I was in Amritsar about a year ago and really loved it. The Golden Temple is an amazing sight...Jallianwallah would be an appropriate place to visit at the moment!
I can't really see the current situation having too much effect there. You might want to bear in mind that Amritsar is very close to the border and Lahore but it's predominantly a Sikh city, not Muslim, and even if all hell breaks loose in Aghanistan, it should be ok. |

Enantiodromia,
For the fullest exposure, you might want to post your request for advice about hotels in Amritsar on the "Punjab and Haryana" thread ("Minor Destinations" category). Just a thought! ![]()

Temple
I actually stayed at the temple - they run hostels there for the pilgims - they have a name but I have forgotten. It's very basic, but atmospheric - you just give a donation.
You can also eat at the temple with the pilgrims. Again it's basic - just dhal and chappati sitting on the floor in long rows - but fun. You have to give a donation here too. Make sure you go to the temple at night - about 930 pm I think - when they put the Holy Book to bed. It's quite a ceremony. Chhers Annie T |

Clubs in Amritsar
While you are at Amritsar, I would recommend Mohun International for accomodation.
As for having your night-outs and a lively evening with good food, Lumsden Club is the best. The Lumsden club, Rambagh gardens, Amritsar 0183 66389/ 225205 - This club has the best non-veg barbecue and kebabs RegardsPuneet Aggarwal "Sonzy" Your Indian Food & Cuisine WZ-ard http://wz.com/food/IndianFoodCuisine.html PuneetAggarwal@wz.com |
