Altitude Sickness -- Leh

SO, finally, we are planning on seeing Leh...for a little bit. We are going to be there only 3-4 days but I feel that anytime at all will be amazing.

Tab Dismox 250 mg? Any recommendations for altitude sickness? Should I buy in Delhi or here in the states. We don't leave until this Tuesday.
Thanks for all your help you guys.

FELIX

Once you start getting up to the higher altitudes, start taking the Diamox, even before any of the symptoms. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE IT WITH PLENTY OF WATER! I can't emphasize this enough since you'll be pissing like a race horse when you take these pills and you don't want to get dehydrated.

The Diamox will not prevent altitude sickness but it definitely will shorten the time that you have symptoms. You'll probably end up getting a bad headache, but after some sleep you'll wake up just fine. Just don't over exert yourself when you start getting symptoms.

I personally got my supply in the US but I'm almost certain you could pick it up in Delhi for a lot cheaper. I'll let someone else chime in on this.

Here's some general info re high altitude acclimazation - be sure to click on the links on this page, too, because they will take you to other useful info:

I have no specific info on Diamox because I didn't use it, but shpatel is right: whether or not you take Diamox, drink plenty of water. Being at high altitude often causes headaches, as does dehydration, and because Ladakh is very dry it's easy to get dehydrated if you aren't careful.

Thanks

Great link.
I actually was an Outdoor Action leader at Princeton and know Rick Curtis! Funny how it all comes around... did you go to P-ton?

Wow! Small world! No, I didn't go to Princeton. I just stumbled on the site while websurfing and thought the information was good.
