AIDS in India

On a mat on the hard stone floor of her tiny home in rural Rajasthan, a 34-year-old widow lay unconscious, gasping for breath, dying of AIDS.

Her name was Mohini Bai, and until recently, she worked in a women's health clinic in her village of Kuncholi, 30 miles from the nearest city. Dry hills ring the village, in a region used as a rugged backdrop for India's moviemakers. Villagers here scratch out a living from small plots of soil, where wheat is still cultivated by hoe and harvested by hand.

This is the first of a five-part series on AIDS in India that is currently running in the San Francisco Chronicle. Here's a link to this article, and you can from there go to the entire series.

Next week is the international AIDS conference in Bangkok.

Of course, that´s the registered ones. Who only knows the real number.
It gave me the chills when I heard it.

Does not help with so called doctors re-suing needles etc. I went to one doctor i India a few years ago after a swarm of flies attacked me (I thought it was quite funny at the time until I noticed I was breaking out in a bad rash-allergic reaction) and he picked up a needle wiped it with a bit of Dettol type liquid and wanted to give me an injection. Told him I was not having an injection and would prefer tablets. He then gave me some tablets that did the trick.

Always ask for tablets instead of an injection. Doctors in India love giving injections as the patients think it is best but if you ask there is usually an alternative. In India they will even try and give you injections for the common cold and tummy upsets. Also most these so called doctors are nothing but medicine salesman, many of them are rarely educated beyond Grade 10.
