Advice for single women travellers

Hi

If you are a woman travelling alone it is useful to buy a cheap wedding band type ring to wear on your wedding finger. It helps with any unwelcome advances as you can say that you are happily married and your husband is meeting you shortly. I also carried a photo of a male and said it was my husband.

On three occasions so far (generally on the bus and train) I have been chatted up by guys which although flattering can be a bit daunting when you are alone. It worked wonders when I said that I was married and showed them a picture so that they could see.

It was quite funny when one guy still persevered and asked if I wanted a boyfriend. "No sex, just kissing and cuddling" he said. I repeated that I had a love marriage and was offended by his remarks. He apologised most sheepishly.

Apart from that, travelling alone has been brill so go for it.

Hi Blueskies girl
Sound like very sound advice. I like the idea of carrying the photo of the 'husband' too. Even through I'm travelling with my husband, I'll make sure to carry a photo of him in case I get accosted when by myself!!

Single female traveller

I didn't have any problems whatsoever in India travelling alone or with other women. I dressed as soon as I arrived in Salwar Kameez (some of them very striking - even if I say so myself).

If a man or young lad tried to shake my hand, I just put my hands together and said Namaste. If they challenged me, I would ask them if they would shake an Indian lady's hand? They always said no they would not, so I would say 'I am lady. Show respect to lady'. If all else fails shout loudly so everyone can hear (and the guy gets very embarrassed) - 'LADY' and put your hand flat towards his face. He'll leave you alone. Of course you get stared at all the time, but that's just India and you will always be a curiosity to everyone!
