AA Meetings
A relative of mine was asking me about AA meetings in India - do they exist, what format do they take, andis alcoholism a big problem in India? Most members probably never gave this a thought, but perhaps there are one or two of you out there who have some info. Thanx!

Hi Conor,
AA is alive and well for sure. My first trip, to Calcutta, I lived around the corner from the Mother House (M.Teresa) and some volunteers told me about St Josephs Rehab at Keorapukur (autorickshaw to Keorapukur after Tollygunge metro). Well I met the most wonderful couple there who had started up AA in Cal as it hadn't been going for decades. The husband died last year but June Pathickaden is running it now with some help. There was a weekly AA meeting in St Mary's Church in Ripon Street, and they were just wonderful. Not all spoke English, but it was an incredible feeling because the non-english speakers still seemed to understand what I was "saying" and vice versa. I really felt blessed going to these meetings. John and June also took me to another meeting but I can't remember where. It is quite easy being AA over there as many peopel dont drink and there is never any pushing of alcohol by the Indians. I am not talking about those unfortunate to be drugged and ripped off etc. Anyway, hope that reassures you ! By the way, June is always looking for volunteers at St Josephs, and it is a fascinating, friendly, and very inclusive place to visit. Get back to me if you wish to meet up with them all. Cheers Raye "this too will pass". |

Someone did tell me recently that they'd found AA in Delhi (I can't recall if it was a public message so can't give you details); I suspect that if you ask around, you will find the meetings you need.

In Delhi, there is a meeting near Connaught Circle at the Free Church, just past the Jantar Mantar on Sansad Marg. Mon, Wed and Sat, 6:45pm. The oldest one going in Delhi, recommended!
